/India PRwire/ - In her holds were Ford car parts and general cargo. Leise Maersk was carrying 3,600 tons of cargo, the equivalent to 200 twenty-foot containers (TEU). She reached Japan 59 days after departing from Baltimore; her next destination was the Philippines where she arrived on the 72nd day. On her homebound voyage, she carried sugar, silk, and oil products.

During the 1930’s, Maersk Line expanded this service, called the Panama Line, which then numbered nine modern vessels. In those days, there were no containers. Cargo was transported on trucks and trains to the port and stored in warehouses. When the ship arrived, the cargo was moved from the warehouse to the quay and then lifted on board in cargo nets and stacked in the cargo holds. A port stay of a week or more was common as this was a very labour intensive and time consuming process.

Cargo was not the only thing we ‘carried’. Prior to 1950, Maersk Line also offered passenger transport. Cargo liners could carry 12 passengers who, for a reasonable fee, could enjoy “a carefree and restful time with the opportunity of becoming acquainted with life on the seven seas and with the population at the many out-of-the-way-places we touch on our way.”

The 1950’s was a decade of expansion for Maersk Line especially in the Far East, connecting Japan with emerging markets in South East Asia and the Middle East, the introduction of a “Round-the-world” line, and inclusion of West Africa in the network.

In 1956, the container revolution was sparked. The first container was shipped aboard the Ideal X from Port Newark, New Jersey to Houston, Texas. The container was the invention of Malcolm McLean. It is said that McLean, while sitting in a truck waiting for the cargo to be reloaded onto a ship, realised that rather than loading and unloading the truck, the truck body itself, with some minor modifications, could be the container that was transported. The benefits of transporting cargo in a container are many e.g. reduced need for warehousing, reduced cargo damage, better logistical opportunities, and fast and standardised operations. All resulting in better efficiency and lower costs. As stated by The Economist, “Without the container, there would be no globalisation.”

It took some time before container shipping really sailed. It was not until the late 1960’s and early 70’s that agreement was reached on the standards, we know today. In 1973, Maersk Line ordered its first dedicated container vessels and in 1975, Adrian Maersk with a 1,400 TEU capacity undertook Maersk Line’s first containerised sailing. In fact, on the original Panama Line inaugurated 47 years before.

The container revolution gained momentum in the 1970’s and 80’s and more and more cargo was moved in containers. Consequently, new requirements to the ports (specialised terminals with container cranes and areas for container storage) and logistics (documentation and information flow across the transport chain) emerged. In order to best support containerisation, A.P. Moller applied a more holistic approach to the transport chain. This led to further involvement in terminal and port development and the establishment of a logistics company (Maersk Logistics, originally called Mercantile).

In the 1990’s, Maersk Line’s focus was cooperation with other lines (P&O Container Lines and Sea-Land) and acquisitions (East Asiatic Company in 1993 and Sea-Land in 1999). The objective - to grow with the customers and meet their requirements as driven by increasing trade and globalisation – is still valid today. Simultaneously, Maersk Line developed its vessels. In 1996, Regina Maersk became the world’s largest, most modern container vessel with a 6,000 TEU capacity and a crew of 15. She only ruled the seas for a year as in 1997, the 6,600 TEU Sovereign Maersk took over.

In 2006, Emma Maersk with a capacity to carry more than 11,000 TEU (Leise Maersk times 65!) set new standards for economical, safe, and environmentally friendly shipping.

Today, 80 years after it all began, Maersk Line is an industry leader and the largest liner shipping company in the world. We will continue to pursue a balanced and sustainable approach towards our business, trade in general, and long term economic growth.

‘Thank you’ to all our customers, suppliers and partners for the past 80 years.

For more information and historical milestones:

» 80th anniversary of Maersk Line fact sheet

Source: Press release distribution via India PRwire

/India PRwire/ -
Port Pipavav has recently commissioned a state-of-the-art environmentally responsive coal handling facility capable of storing nearly 2, 50,000 MT of coal. This unique coal yard with its modern features is one of the few if not the only one of its kind in the Indian sub-continent.

According to Mr. Ashley Dinning, Chief Commercial Officer, Gujarat Pipavav Port Ltd, the newly designed coal yard ensures that coal can be handled and stored efficiently and safely, without adverse impact on any other cargo.” At Port Pipavav we handle substantial amounts of fertiliser and cotton" he said. "It is critical to ensure that these and other sensitive cargo types are not contaminated by coal dust at the port.

The new coal facility includes an integrated system of two electric level luffing cranes and a mobile conveyor system leading to the coal yard. The main conveyor system is designed to handle coal to be unloaded from ship and stacked in the coal yard. It is 1.2Km long and divided into three segments with two travelling trippers in stack yard, the conveyor system has a rated handling capacity of 2,000 ton per hour.

"The most striking feature of the facility is a well planned and designed coal yard, which prevents and controls the coal dust from escaping the yard thus avoiding contamination to any other cargo type" Mr. Dinning said.

The coal yard is divided at right angles in plots with the conveyor passing through the middle. A wide peripheral road connected with a huge cross road serves the coal yard. To control and contain coal dust generation, the yard is encircled by three meters high beams with tree plantation at three levels. The windward side of the yard is protected with fabric curtains and leeward side with water curtain dust separation system. For fire protection the yard is equipped with a fire main, ten water monitors and forty five hydrants. A thermal image camera is available for monitoring the temperature of coal heaps. The drain water can be recycled and used as feed for the water curtain.

In other development,, two private CFS facilities namely the Box Trans CFS and LCL Logix Park commenced operations in close proximity to the port. The Box Trans CFS offers a total area of 23 acres, warehousing space of 9,000 sq. mts and yard capacity of 3,000 TEU’s. The yard is equipped with 15 reefer plug points to accommodate reefer containers and the CFS also offers trade facilitators an administrative building with 21,000 sq.ft office space available

The LCL Logix Park Facility and is spread over 25 acres of land. It currently offers warehousing space of 6,500 sq. mts and has a yard capacity of 5,000 TEU’s. The yard is equipped with 25 reefer plug points and the CFS also has an administrative building with 15,000 sq.ft office space available for trade facilitators.

Background

Port Pipavav, India’s first port in the private sector is an APM Terminals run port located in the state of Gujarat at a distance of 140kms South West of Bhavnagar. Port Pipavav is a multi-purpose, all weather port which handles bulk, break-bulk and containerised cargo. The port has dedicated 735m of quay length for handling containers which are serviced by 3 post-panamax and 3 panamax quay cranes. The port has also dedicated 325m of quay length for handling bulk and break-bulk cargo. An on-dock rail facility with dedicated sidings to handle bulk, break-bulk and containerised cargo has also been developed.

The port is well connected to its hinterland by road as well as the broad gauge rail network of India. The port offers weekly train services to all major North West India ICDs.

www.pipavav.com

APM Terminals is one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing global container terminal operators, with a geographically balanced Global Terminal Network of over 50 facilities in 31 countries and five continents, serving more than 60 container shipping lines around the world.

www.apmterminals.com

Source: Press release distribution via India PRwire

/India PRwire/ -
Maersk Line is pleased to announce that A.P. Moller - Maersk has signed an agreement with Hyundai Heavy Industries for the delivery of 18 container vessels in 2011 and 2012. The vessels will each have a capacity of 4,500 TEU (twenty- foot equivalent unit).

The ships are designed to meet the highest demands for safe and economic transportation of goods in geographies such as the Eastern Mediterranean, Africa, and Latin America. In addition, each vessel is equipped with a waste heat recovery system. The system reuses excess heat from the exhaust and thus generates energy for propulsion of the vessel or on-board electricity consumption. The reduction in fuel consumption results in a corresponding reduction of emissions. It is the first time that an Asian yard will install a waste heat recovery system of this size and efficiency.

"We are very happy with this order. These vessels are part of our fleet renewal and development programme. They will enable us to continue to offer competitive container shipping based on a modern, economical, and environmentally friendly fleet," says Senior Vice President Michel Deleuran, Head of Network & Product in Maersk Line.

In view of the flexible design of the vessels, Maersk Line will work on a variety of deployment scenarios. Currently, we expect to deploy the vessels in the trades to and from Sub-Saharan Africa.

Michel Deleuran explains, "We have served the Sub-Saharan African market for more than 40 years, and we are dedicated to support the continued trade development in the region. We aim to continue to develop our services and support our customers' increasing business in the trades between Sub-Saharan Africa and the Americas, Europe, and Asia. These vessels will support us in that ambition and also show our long term commitment to Africa."

Today, Maersk Line has a 25% market share in Sub-Saharan Africa and own offices in 35 countries in the region. Customers are offered fixed weekly services in most trades, the best schedule integrity in terms of port calls, coverage and timeliness, and transit times are among the best in the market.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, the average export growth is currently 7% p.a. The average import growth is 11% p.a. Since 2002, export and import volumes have almost doubled. To support this development, the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group is not only involved in container shipping (Maersk Line, Safmarine, and Ocean Africa Container Line), but also in other container related activities such as terminals, stevedoring, logistics, warehousing and rail transportation.

"During the last 50 years, container transportation has been a key driver in globalization. Our business is about connecting the globe and we believe globalization based on fair and free trade is a winning proposition for Sub-Saharan Africa. Every day, our efforts and services contribute to improving world trade and thereby the living standards of people around the world," concludes Michel Deleuran.

Source: Press release distribution via India PRwire

/India PRwire/ - Pipavav Shipyard has appealed to the government to take a cue from Korea and China and help the ship building industry to succeed.

Addressing the The Lloyds List-sponsored two-day “International Shipbuilding Conference 2008” in progress at Athens, Pipavav Shipyard CEO Mr Ray Stewart pointed out that the Korean and Chinese governments have helped their ship building industries attain global number one and two positions, respectively.

India is being represented by Pipavav Shipyard, the upcoming yard in Gujarat which is rapidly becoming one of the largest shipbuilding complexes in the country. Senior executives from major yards in Japan, South Korea, China and Europe also made their presentations, in addition to contributions from ship-owning, steel, financing, ship-broking and legal companies.

Mr Stewart’s topic was “A Spotlight on India” and he called upon the Indian government to come out clear on the issue of continuation of the subsidy scheme for the country’s ship building industry that expired in August 2007. “This is needed in order to encourage other companies to enter the industry and enable a critical mass to be achieved in the country. This would in turn lead to further investment from international and national equipment and material suppliers,” he said.

Mr Stewart said “the invitation (to represent at the conference) in itself is a sign that India has arrived on the world stage and it was a great honor and endorsement for Pipavav Shipyard to be selected. It was a wonderful opportunity to inform such an august audience about our plans and those of our Indian yard colleagues.”

Pipavav Shipyard is now building the biggest ships under construction in India – a series of Panamax bulk-carriers which are about 74,500 dwt tons and 225m long. The yard has won orders exceeding USD 1 billion which places it at number two in the world for Panamax bulk-carriers after the major Japanese builder Oshima. The company started production of the first ships in the series in February this year and will deliver its first vessel early next year.

Mr Stewart said: “We are investing in some of the best state-of-the-art equipment that money can buy in order to ensure that shipyard achieves best international practices and productivity levels. Pipavav Shipyard is in advance stage of constructing one of the largest dry-dock in the world admeasuring 651m by 65m and will be building two Panamax vessels at a time in the dock initially but will increase simultaneous production of other ships in due course.”.

He pointed out that the recent major study by KPMG has shown that shipbuilding has one of the highest economic multiplier effects among all industries, especially in employment and investment. “There has never been a better time for the Indian shipbuilding industry to really take off and become a major world player” Mr. Stewart added.

Lloyds List is the number one daily newspaper in the marine industry across the world. It was established in the 18th century in London as the city became the marine insurance capital of the world. It now covers all maritime aspects as well as organizing some of the top industry conferences.

Source: Press release distribution via India PRwire

Pipavav Shipyard Limited (PSL) is a testimony to the vision and active participation of the private sector in India’s quest to become a major player in the global maritime industry...

PSL is currently setting up of an integrated shipbuilding facility which, upon completion, will be the largest in India and among the largest in Asia. The Government of India has accorded the project the status of an Export Oriented Unit (“EOU”).

The shipyard complex is located on the South Western coast of Gujarat, about 130 kms from Bhavnagar to its east and Diu, about 90 kms to its west. It is adjacent to Pipavav Port, the first private sector port in India, which is controlled and operated by the A.P.
/India PRwire/ - The Government of India has recently approved a payment of Rs. 117.75 crore along with interest w.e.f. October 2001 to RITES, a Government of India enterprise under the Ministry of Railways. The payment is intended to be made in cash in 2008-2009, through additional budget allocation provided by the Ministry of Finance to the Ministry of Railways for outstanding payments against the project executed by the Company in Iraq on deferred payment basis.
RITES Ltd. executed an operation and maintenance project in Iraq during 1988 to 1990. Payments under the project were held up due to imposition of UN sanctions on Iraq, which resulted in restriction in remittance of funds outside Iraq. To mitigate the financial problems of the Indian exporters arising due to sanctions on Iraq, the Government of India decided to provide relief to the exporters in 2001 by making payment/issuance of bonds. RITES could get only part payment in 2003 against the said approval and now the balance payment of Rs. 117.75 crore, intended to be made in 2008-2009, has been approved recently by the Government of India.

RITES Ltd. is, subject to market conditions and other considerations, proposing to make an initial public offer of its equity shares and has filed a Draft Red Herring Prospectus (“DRHP”) with SEBI.

/India PRwire/ - Delhi Integrated Multi Modal Transit System (DIMTS) is ensuring that the BRT corridor is accessible to every Delhi citizen.

The soon to be operational BRT corridor spread on a stretch of 5.6 km in phase I (starting point Ambedkar Nagar and ending point Moolchand) has incorporated many features which make it accessible for all. The corridor has been audited by Samarthyam, National Centre for Accessible Environments. Samarthyam was also part of the ‘mock-up’ exercise held for the corridor and the low floor buses with dedicated lanes and accessible approach to the shelters to provide user group perspective and promote Universal Designs.

Commenting on the system, Mr. Manoj Aggarwal, Head of Transport DIMTS said, “The concept of BRTS was designed and devised to empower each and every citizen of Delhi.

/India PRwire/ - According to the Clare T.D., Iarnród Éireann has not ruled out the proposal and would consider any evidence to suggest that such a development would be warranted.

In a letter to Minister Killeen, the Chief Executive of Iarnród Éireann outlined, “The reopening of Crusheen Station was not included in the Western Rail Corridor Phase 1 project with the reopening of the Ennis to Athenry line because of the very limited development in Crusheen, as identified in Clare County Council’s North Clare Local Area Plan 2005.”

According to Minister Killeen, “I have reminded the CEO that detailed additional information has been collated by the local community, with considerable assistance from Clare County Council, regarding the potential future use of the proposed rail stop. This information along with undertakings relating to the provision of adequate car parking facilities at the platform in Crusheen have been submitted to Iarnród Éireann. In light of this new information, I have requested the company to review the potential for the establishment of a rail stop at Crusheen.”

The Minister said he had also received confirmation from Iarnród Éireann that it would be keen to work with developers who would fund a station scheme, as is the case at a number of locations elsewhere on the national rail network.

“Recent reports that Iarnród Éireann has categorically ruled out the future opening of a rail stop at Crusheen could not have been further from the truth. The company has expressed its willingness to consider any evidence supporting the establishment of a rail stop at Crusheen, as part of scheduled passenger services between Ennis and Athenry”, stated the Minister.

He added that there remained a strong case for the provision of a rail stop in Crusheen.

“Two stops are being provided for between Gort and Athenry and none on the very long stretch of railway between Ennis to Gort. Crusheen is an ideal location for people coming from Ruan, Corofin, Tubber, Boston and elsewhere in North Clare as well as Tulla and other areas of East Clare”, concluded Minister Killeen.

Source: Press release distribution via India PRwire

“Enhancing reputations–Increasing exposure–Increasing understanding”

Founded in 2006, Dunphy Public Relations is a communications group led by Mark Dunphy from County Clare.
