There will be an introductory talk on the evening of October 3rd where the Tibetan Buddhist approach to life and death will be discussed. This will be followed by core teachings from the Bardo Thodrol on Oct 4th and 5th.

The Bardo is a Tibetan word that refers to intermediate states of experience. There are many transitory phases that we go through while living and dying. Every gap, every transition is an opportunity for transformation, if at all we know how to consciously make use of them. By knowing how to live consciously with inner peace and compassion for self and others, we can begin to understand the Bardo states. There are Bardo states of dreaming and meditation. We also go through Bardo states during death. We could be of help to others during the process of their death if we know what they undergo. At our own inevitable departure from this life, there is an opportunity to encounter our own true nature (the Buddha-nature, the Clear Light) and to attain the ultimate enlightenment. Thus we learn to face both life and death with courage and inner peace.The talk on the 3rd of October will discuss and how we could face both life and death with clear awareness and thus remain vigilent to make use of the opportunities.

The Bardo Thodrol (usually known in English as The Tibetan Book of the Dead) can be understood at two levels - first, as an advanced practice for trained meditators, and second, as a support for beings experiencing the Bardo without specific meditative training, experience or empowerment. The Bardo Thodrol is a text based on oral teachings by Guru Padmasambhava and recorded in written form around 760 AD.Bardo Thodrol literally means "The Great Liberation through Hearing in the Intermediate State".This text describes, and is intended to guide one through, the experiences during the interval between death and the next rebirth.The Bardo state is recognized as an opportunity for change; a starting point of transformation. It is understood as a gap between familiar boundaries through which beings can glimpse the absolute true nature of reality. By fully recognizing this ultimate nature, the deceased is capable of breaking the afflictive cycle of rebirth (Samsara) and achieving final liberation - the enlightenment for the sake of all sentient Beings. We usually tend to avoid thinking about or dealing with the fact of death. The refusal to acknowledge the eventuality of death and impermanence is a fundamental cause for the confusion and ignorance that prevents spiritual progress. Spiritual growth is achieved not by avoiding ‘unpleasant’ facts, but by facing and accepting them during the natural eventuality - with calmness, wisdom and compassion. The teachings on October 4th and 5th willilluminate on thedetails from the Bardo Thodrol. Bardo Thodrol teachings has an empowerment of Vajrasatva or alternatively an empowerment of Shitro 100-deities, as a prerequisite. This is becuase, the teachings on the Bardo comes from the Dzogchen cycle of teachings and an empowerment is essential to relate correctly with those teachings. On this context, the teaching on October 4th will begin with an empowerment of Vajrasatva.

Vajrasattva (dorje-sempa) practice and realization is one of the foundational steps in the path of 'the Great Perfection Teachings' known as Dzogchen (Mahāsandhi-yoga) and is the basis of Guhyagarbha (gsang ba'i snying po) Tantra also known as the Vajrasatva Māyājāla Tantra. Vajrasattva is Buddha of primordial purity and is the condensed essence of the 100 peaceful and wrathful appearances that arise in the Bardo. Vajrasattva practice is an essential element in the daily practice set of a Vajrayāna practitioner as it helps in purifying all sorts of negativities and bad karma. The Vajrasattva empowerment would be conferred based on the cycle of terma (treasure) teachings known as Namcho - the Buddha in the Palm of the Hand. This is also one of the foundational practices in the Namcho Ngondro. The participants receiving this empowerment need to take a practicecommitment to recite at least the short mantra of Vajrasattva (OM VAJRASATVA HUM) for a minimum repetition of 7 counts every day.

Empowerment & Guided Meditation on

Avalokitesvara - The Buddha of Compassion

& Teaching on the Principles of Deity-Yoga

Deity Meditation (Deva-Yoga) is an important aspect of Vajrayāna Buddhism. The essential Buddhist teachings of Calm-Abiding (skt: śamata, tib: zhi-gnas) and Special-Insight (skt: vipaśyāna, tib: lhag-mthong) are practiced within Deity-Yoga in a unique way. Through its profound view the practitioner penetrates into the true nature of all experiences deeply and swiftly. Khenchen Pema Sherab Rinpoche will confer an empowerment (skt: abhisheka) of Chenrezig (Avalokiteśvara-The Buddha of Compassion) and will explain the principles of Deity-Yoga in that basis. Khen Rinpoche will also be leading a guided meditation session on Chenrezig.

The Empowerment will be according to the Namcho Cycle of Treasure (Terma) Teachings. After the empowerment, the participants can meditate upon Chenrezig and recite the Mantra OM MANI PADME HUM HRI with clear understanding.

Avalokitesvara empowerment is open for all and is good opportunity to receive an introduction to Vajrayāna Buddhism.

Inner Tantra Empowerment of Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche)

Khenchen Pema Sherab Rinpoche will confer the empowerment of Guru Rinpoche according to Namcho Cycle of Treasure (Terma) Teachings revealed by Terton Migyur Dorje, a great yogi of the Nyingma School of Tibetan Buddhism. This empowerment belongs to the anuttara-yoga-tantra (highest yoga tantra) class of Tantras. Padmasambhava empowerment is open to those who are ready to take on practice commitments and willing to abide by Tantric Samaya (the sacred bonding through the pledge the disciple takes from the Guru). Prior understanding of the foundations of Buddha-Dharma is required since this is an advanced teaching.

About the Teacher

Khenchen Pema Sherab Rinpoche is the most senior Khenpo in the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism outside of Tibet. He was born in Tibet and studied under masters and scholars of all schools of Tibetan Buddhism. He was ordained in 1953. He reached India in 1959. At the age of seventeen, he met his spiritual teacher, His Holiness Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche. He received most of his teachings from Khyentse Rinpoche including the Guhyagarbha Root Tantra, Longchenpa's Treasury of Pith Instructions, Kagyud Ngag Dzog, Rinchen Terdzod, Jigme Lingpa's Yoten Dzod, Lochen Dharmashri's Explanation on Ngari Penchen's Three Vows, etc. On various occasions, he also received many teachings and empowerments from highly realized masters like His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche, His Holiness Penor Rinpoche and His Holiness Taklung Tsetrul Rinpoche.

In 1968, H.H. Penor Rinpoche invited him to Namdroling Monastery (Golden Temple, Bylakkuppe) to teach Dharma there. Ngagyur Nyingma Institute, the largest monastic University of the Nyingma tradition outside of Tibet, was established at Namdroling in 1978. Since then, Khen Rinpoche has been teaching both Sutra and Tantra at the institute. H.H. Penor Rinpoche conferred him the title of Khenchen (great abbot). Khen Rinpoche has travelled around the globe giving teachings and empowerments. He has also written several books on Buddhist philosophy and logic and a biography of Guru Padmasambhava.

As a first step in this methodology, the Swamiji requests various musicians to play several notes as specified by him on their respective instruments. Once Swamiji is convinced about the right note and its right frequency it is fed into the synthesiser. The end product is a unique composition created by the Swamiji that assures a primary or supplementary cure for diseases.

The Swamiji has also adapted the basic melodic structure of some select kritis of Saint Tyagaraja like Mokshamu Galada (Saramati), Shobillu Saptaswara (Jaganmohini), Samaja vara gamana (Hindolam) and so on.

A long quest:

The Swamiji's quest began when he was a child of eight. On May 26, 1942, in the small hamlet of Mekedatu, Jayalakshmi and Narasimha Sastri were blessed with a baby boy. They named him Satyanarayana. His parents were engrossed in spiritual practices and Satyanarayana grew up in this atmosphere. Even as a young boy, he displayed a natural inclination to classical music and spirituality.

Satyanarayana became Ganapati Sachchidananda Swamiji at the age of 22. His mantra was Nadopasana (worship of music).

Addressing a press conference here in Hyderabad today Mr. Syed Tanvir, Press Secretary --India and Mr. Arif Ahmed Quereshi, President of Zamaat Ahmadiyya Hyderabad said as part of these year long celebrations of Khilafath, 500 of its members have taken up the Cleaning of Osmania General Hospital on 24th May and distributed fruits to the patients at Government Maternity Hospital on 25th.

Tomorrow morning at 10am the community is also organizing a Convention at Masjid-ul-Hamd at Saidabad in Hyderabad. The program will start with hoisting of community flag and the national flag by President of Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat. Later in the afternoon at 3pm, I.S.T Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmed Khalifathul Masih 5th will address the Jamaat worldwide on Muslim Television Ahmadiyya International live from London.

The community has the privilege of translating the Holy Quran in more than 50 languages including many Indian languages. It has been striving to promote Peace and Universal Brotherhood in the world with the motto “Love For All, Hatred For None”. In a society where fighting among each other is on the increase, where people fight for religion with each other and hate religion for personal reasons, Ahmadiyaa Muslim Jamaat has spearheaded a peace initiative all over the country. Prof. Mashirul Hassan, a wellknown historian and Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, said in his keynote address that it is in the fitness of things that the seminar is being held in Delhi which has been the cradle of our composite culture. It is the city of Mir, Ghalib, Hakim Ajmal Khan and Dr. Ansari - all protagonists of a composite way of living. The theme of our composite culture was also central to our liberation struggle exemplified by Gandhi, Nehru and Subhash Chandra Bose.

He said composite culture does not mean the merger of religious, ethnic and linguistic identities. Composite living means the recognition of those identities. A composite society allows and nurtures those identities to flourish. You cannot have plural nationhood without composite living being embedded in it. Composite culture does not mean imposition of uniformity or homogenization It implies recognition of diversity which has been a characteristic feature of the India society, Prof. Hassan underlined.

Dr. Syeda Hameed, member, Plannining Commission, said that the poetry of her great grand father, Maulana Altaf Hussain Hali, was a convergence of communal harmony, feminist thought and educational philosophy. His poetry can be better understood if seen in the context of our composite culture. She said culture was an assimilation of ideas, the cultivation of mind towards a symbiotic structure without boundaries. Thousand of years of Hindu-Muslim interaction led to our cultural evolution. The ganga-jamuni styles in art, writing, religious practices, customs, social mores and sanctions form the basis of India’s composite culture.

Yawar Abbas, a broadcaster and filmmaker, said that an ethically cleansed society its a morally unclean society. It is society which is intellectually bankrupt and socially monotonous and boring. A society that is doomed from the start. It is cross-fertilization which gives a society its strength. This is what gave India its strength. Two of India’s ‘crowning glories’ are a product of this cross-fertilization - Indian classical music and Urdu language. Despite the partition of the country, we are the same people. The mass madness of 1947 cannot destroy the heritage of a thousand years. We made a mistake by agreeing to the partition and its would be a bigger mistake if we accepted the partition in our hearts and reacted in kind to a false two-nation theory.

Dr A.A. Fatmi, Allahabad University, dwelt at length with the Sufi tradition. He said Kabir’s writings transcended religious barriers to reach the heights of universal humanity and brotherhood. The Sufis and Bhakti saints like Guru Nanak and others spread this literary-cultural enlightenment across the country and a new composite culture emerged and took deep roots in the society.

Asghar Ali Engineer, a social activist and scholar, said much of the credit for our composite culture goes to the Sufi saints who wrote in regional languages and dialects. Though they were scholars of Arabic and Persian, they did not write in these languages which were read and spoken only by the elite. Baba Farid is an a extraordinary example. He chose to write in Punjabi and is one of the most popular poet-saints of the region on both sides of the border. He was the first poet of Punjabi language.

Dr Engineering said that it is a political lie to say that Islam was spread with the force of the sword. It is necessary to debunk this false idea because it spread misunderstanding and hatred among the people. Islam spread in India because of the Sufis who were considered a role model by the people. The universal humanism of the Sufis attracted the people and that is how Islam spread in India.

Others who spoke at the seminar included broadcaster and lyricist from London, Chaman Lal Chaman, former Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, Prof M N Farooqi, Mr Thomas Deegan, writer, and editor of group editor of Sahara India newspapers, Mr Aziz Barni.

Unusually, Bishop Das, 44, comes from the Baptist rather than the Anglican church tradition and, uniquely, this is his first visit to the UK and he will be based in Marshalswick, St Albans, for a while after the conference.

During his time in Marshalswick, staying as a guest of Marshalswick Baptist Free Church, the Bishop will have a personal meeting with the Bishop of St Albans, the Rt Rev Christopher Herbert. He will pay a visit to an ecumenical church in Milton Keynes and conclude his stay by preaching at Marshalswick Baptist Free Church’s morning service on Sunday 4th February as well as at Evensong at St Albans Abbey that evening.

“Although Baptists do not appoint bishops, Dr Das bears the title and responsibility of ‘Bishop’ because the Baptist churches in Orissa, in India, joined the Church of North India (CNI) when it was formed,” explained the Rev Graham Clarke, minister of Marshalswick Baptist Free Church. “The Baptist work in Orissa was begun by British Baptists working with the Baptist Missionary Society (BMS) and Dr Das gained a doctorate after writing a thesis about this connection with the BMS.

“As a church, we are continuing to support a CNI-sponsored rural hospital in Diptipur, in West Orissa,” he added. “Although perpetually short of funds, this hospital is performing vital healthcare work in that community – and we are keen to have an update on its work from Dr Das.”

About the Diocese of Cuttack

The Diocese of Cuttack is the oldest of three Church of North India (CNI) Dioceses in Orissa.

The Diocese runs educational institutions, including schools and one college in the urban centres of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar. It also runs schools in people’s homes in the rural areas. Most of these were started by the Baptist Missionary Society (BMS) and continue to provide vital educational services. However they are limited mostly to the urban elite. On the other hand, village Christians have remained poor for generations. They have suffered neglect, discrimination and deprivation.

About the Rt Rev Dr Samson Das, Bishop of Cuttack

The Rt Rev Dr Samson Das, Bishop of Cuttack was born in Puri, Orissa, in 1963.

He was initially educated at Puri school and college. He was awarded a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Serampore College, Kolkata, India in 1996. In 1997/98, he completed a Special Programme of Advanced Theological Studies from Tainan Theological College and Seminary, Taiwan, and, in 2001, he received a Doctorate in Ministry.

From 1986 to 1992, he worked as a Missionary in the Khond Hills at Baliaguda, PhulbanDistrict; from 1993 to 1996, he worked as the Presbyter at Oriya Baptist church at Behampur and from 1996 until June 2000, he was the Presbyter-In-Charge of the English Baptist Church in Cuttack. Within the Diocese of Cuttack, he has also served as Youth Director, Vice President, Secretary and Bishop’s Commissary.

Marshalswick Baptist Free Church (MBFC) is actively involved in serving the needs of the local community, including making its premises available to non-members. There are a number of events and activities for all church members and adherents. On a weekly basis, some 15 different organisations and some 1,000 people a week use the church’s premises.

Moving to its current premises in 1968 and becoming Marshalswick Baptist Free Church, the church dates from 1880 when, as Tabernacle Baptist Church, it met first in the Corn Exchange, St Albans.
