Says Amit Nath, Country Manager - India & SAARC, Trend Micro, “The spam which has so far affected computers in China, US and Japan, may come with a subject line like, ‘Election Night Results’ or ‘Priorities for the New President’ or ‘Fear of a Black President’. The modus operandi of infecting is quite stealthy, which may lead several gullible users infected – the email invites readers to click on a link to watch Obama’s speech – this link leads them to a make-believe website, ‘America.gov’. The video pane reads, ‘Loading Player’, and prompts to download Adobe Flash Player. To further make it look genuine, the site also provides the estimated time for downloading as 4-6 seconds! This tricks users into clicking the link that serves the malicious file adobe_flash9.exe.”

Trend Micro detects the downloaded Trojan file as TROJ_DLOADER.ISZ, of 3,261 bytes size. Trend Micro researcher Macalintal further points out that this spam run is from the same group that sends fake bank certificate spam (targeting Wachovia, Bank of America, Merrill Lynch, and a German bank’s account holders). The properties of this attack still suggest cybercriminals using a fast-flux network of compromised computers. This spam run is currently still underway as of this writing, using different subjects and fast-changing domains.

Warns Mr. Nath, “Trend Micro analysis reveals that TROJ_DLOADER.ISZ downloads an infostealer, TSPY_PAPRAS.AM, which in turn drops a rootkit component which hides its routines. This infostealer dives into network packets to scour for passwords using Carnivore by searching strings like ftp, icq, imap, and pop3. It sends stolen information to a server in Ukraine. The Trojan is known to infect Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP and Server 2003.”

The malicious URL where this Trojan is downloaded is already blocked by the Trend Micro Smart Protection Network.

Demand for Ethernet-based LAN (E-LAN) services is continuing to rise with customers asking for E-LAN service at regional and national levels. This service can potentially span across multiple Ethernet metro and MPLS backbone networks. For an end-to-end service delivery across these networks, numerous issues have to be tackled including MAC address scaling, Quality of Service (QoS) assurance, service management with OAM, etc. The current design approaches using 802.1ad and H-VPLS have some scalability issues and cannot scale to large number of customers. In this presentation, Khanna will look at new approaches to create scalable network topologies using VPLS and PBB as well as discuss ways to provide end-to-end QoS and using 802.1ag as the OAM mechanism for these networks.

Microsoft’s objective for the EEC was to deploy a network that provides internal and external customers access to resources located within the EEC and labs connected to its new 10 gigabit campus area network (CAN). The center’s operators demanded a solution that would scale to meet escalating performance requirements, but would be flexible enough to allow staff to reconfigure the network regularly to meet customer needs. During the months of April, May, and June of 2008, over 346 million unique IP addresses connected to the Akamai global server network - five percent more than during the first three months of the year. Extrapolating data gathered across Akamai's network, the "State of the Internet" report analyzes the origins of attack traffic, network outages and de-peering events, as well as provides a look at broadband connectivity by geography. As the Company's second published edition, the report also now provides a quarter-over-quarter view into trends.

Insights on India:

· Akamai’s global network saw 2.1 million unique IPs from India, and India ranked 14th in terms of unique IPs, a growth of 4.5 percent over last quarter

· India had 0.002 IPs per capita – translating to 2 unique IP addresses per 1000 people

· India ranked 15th in terms of attack traffic origination in Q2, contributing 1 percent to observed global attack traffic – last quarter India was ranked at 10th

· The percentage of broadband connections from India with speeds above 5 Mbps (high broadband) and 2 Mps (broadband) were 0.6% and 4.6% respectively

· India’s high broadband IP per capita was .00001 (1 IP with speeds above 5 Mbps per 100,000 people)

· The percentage of connections with speeds less than 256 Kbps from India was 26 percent

Commenting on the report, Sanjay Singh, vice president of Global Services & Support, Akamai said, “Our global network of 36,000 servers across 70 countries enables us to offer unique insight into how the Internet is being leveraged around the world. While the report notes that India has just 2 unique IPs per 1,000 people on average, we believe India’s Internet penetration will significantly increase in the coming years, thanks in part to the economic boom and increasing IT adoption. Akamai is in a unique position to be able to closely monitor the trends in India regarding Internet consumption, and to share those findings in this quarterly report.”

Findings from the report also include a closer look at the trend of distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks to continue to target exploits that were identified years ago, suggesting there is still a significant population of insufficiently patched systems connected to the Internet.

From a protocol perspective, the report highlights that the second quarter of 2008 saw increased DNS resolution capacity, steps towards additional generic top-level domains, and a key IPv6 deadline for the U.S. federal government.

In addition, Akamai's unique level of visibility into the connection speeds of systems issuing requests to the Akamai network has created a one-of-a-kind view into broadband adoption around the globe. Leveraging that data, Akamai's quarterly "State of the Internet" report identifies both the countries and U.S. states with the fastest and slowest average connection speeds exhibited by IP addresses originating from those respective geographies.

Foundry's revenue for the second quarter of 2008 was $160.7 million, compared to $143.2 million in the second quarter of 2007, and compared to $150.1 million in the first quarter of 2008, an increase of 12% and 7% respectively. Net income was $18.3 million or $0.12 per diluted share, compared to net income of $15.6 million, or $0.10 per diluted share in the second quarter of 2007, and net income of $13.9 million, or $0.09 per diluted share in the first quarter of 2008.

Revenue for the first six months of 2008 was $310.7 million, compared to $279.1 million for the first six months of 2007, an increase of 11%.Net income for the first six months of 2008 was $32.2 million, or $0.21 per diluted share, compared to net income of $24.7 million, or $0.16 per diluted share, for the same period in 2007.

Recent testing by Miercom evaluated over a dozen switches for power consumption.
