/India PRwire/ - Biocon Limited, India's pioneering biotechnology company, and Abraxis BioScience, Inc. (NASDAQ:ABII), a fully integrated biotechnology company, today announced the launch of ABRAXANE® (paclitaxel protein-bound particles for injectable suspension) (albumin-bound) in India for the treatment of breast cancer after failure of combination therapy for metastatic disease or relapse within six months of adjuvant chemotherapy. ABRAXANE is now available in India as a single-use 100 mg vial (as a lyophilized powder, to be reconstituted for intravenous administration).

In October 2007, ABRAXANE was approved by the Drug Controller General of India. The approval was based on the clinical trial data that was the basis of approval in the United States. The Phase III clinical trial in the U.S. demonstrated that ABRAXANE nearly doubled the response rate, significantly prolonged time to progression, and significantly improved overall survival in the second-line setting versus solvent-based Taxol® in the approved indication.

In the U.S. pivotal head-to-head trial, the overall response rate of ABRAXANE was 33% vs. 19% compared to Taxol (P = .001), and ABRAXANE achieved a 25% percent improvement in time to tumor progression (23.0 weeks vs. 16.9 weeks; hazard ratio = 0.75; P = .006) when compared to Taxol. Furthermore, patients receiving ABRAXANE in the second-line setting had a significantly prolonged survival by an additional 27% compared to solvent-based Taxol (56.4 weeks vs. 46.7 weeks; P = 0.24). The tolerability with ABRAXANE and Taxol was comparable, despite the 50% greater dose of paclitaxel administered as ABRAXANE.

"The launch of ABRAXANE in India represents a major strategic step in our plan to provide safer and more effective cancer treatments on a global scale,” said Patrick Soon-Shiong, M.D., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Abraxis BioScience. “In addition to India, our marketing agreement with Biocon covers more than ten countries, and we are working closely with national authorities throughout the region to receive regulatory approvals and commence marketing activities as soon as practicable.”

“This launch provides breakthrough therapeutics to cancer patients in India,” said Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Chairman & Managing Director of Biocon. “ABRAXANE is a significant advance in taxane therapy for the treatment of breast cancer. This unique product eliminates the need for chemical solvents and allows for higher doses of paclitaxel without compromising safety and tolerability. The launch of ABRAXANE reiterates our belief in strategic licensing partnerships to advance therapeutics in India, and we take great pride in providing oncologists in India with the latest treatment in breast cancer.”

Ms. Mazumdar-Shaw noted that ABRAXANE is an important addition to Biocon's Oncotherapeutics portfolio, which has already seen the successful launch of its proprietary antibody, BIOMAb EGFR™ for the treatment of head and neck cancers.

Neil Desai, Ph.D., Vice President of Research and Development at Abraxis BioScience, said, “ABRAXANE is the first nanotechnology based anti-cancer drug that is administered as albumin-bound particles of approximately 130 nanometers and takes advantage of albumin, a natural protein that acts as the body's key transporter of nutrients and other water-insoluble molecules and accumulates in tumor tissues. The drug has demonstrated superiority in progression free survival over both Taxol® Injection and Taxotere® Injection in recent randomized clinical trials. The initial clinical trials for ABRAXANE were conducted in India and we are very satisfied to be able to bring this drug to the Indian patients through our partner Biocon.”

Rakesh Bamzai, President – Marketing, Biocon, said, “Presently, more than 100,000 new cases of breast cancer occur in Indian women every year. Breast cancer is the second largest cause of death among women diagnosed with cancer in India. With the launch of ABRAXANE through Biocon’s innovation led Oncotherapeutics division and the growing need for this drug in the country, we look forward to attaining market leadership in this segment.”

Cancer rates in India are lower than those seen in Western countries, but are rising with increasing migration of rural population to the cities, increasing life expectancy and changing lifestyles. The breast is the second most common site of cancer in women after the cervix uteri. In the metropolitan cities of New Delhi and Mumbai, it is the most common kind of cancer in women. The annual age-adjusted rate (AAR) varies between the urban and rural areas. In the urban areas, the AAR is 21.9 to 28.3 per 100,000, whereas in rural areas, it is 8.6 per 100,000.

In August 2007, Abraxis established a licensing agreement with Biocon for the commercialization of ABRAXANE in India. Under the terms of the agreement, Biocon has the right to market ABRAXANE in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and certain other South Asian and Persian Gulf countries. Subsequently, Abraxis received approval in October 2007 from India’s Drug Control General to market ABRAXANE in India.

ABRAXANE is approved for marketing in 35 countries. Abraxis has several pending patent applications in India relating to ABRAXANE.

In the Asia-Pacific region, ABRAXANE is approved for marketing in China and Korea in addition to India. ABRAXANE is under regulatory review for the treatment of breast cancer by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in Australia, the Federal Authority for Healthcare and Social Development Regulation in Russia, and the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare in Japan.

Source: Press release distribution via India PRwire

About ABRAXANE®

ABRAXANE® is a solvent-free chemotherapy treatment option for metastatic breast cancer. Developed using Abraxis BioScience's proprietary nabTM technology platform, ABRAXANE is a protein-bound chemotherapy agent, which combines paclitaxel with albumin, a naturally-occurring human protein, to deliver the drug and eliminate the need for solvents in the administration process. Because solvents are eliminated, ABRAXANE allows for the delivery of a 49% higher dose compared to solvent-based paclitaxel (Taxol®) without compromising safety and tolerability. ABRAXANE is administered in 30 minutes (as compared to three hours for solvent-based paclitaxel).

ABRAXANE is currently in various stages of investigation for the treatment of the following cancers: first-line metastatic breast, non-small cell lung, malignant melanoma, pancreatic, and gastric. The most serious adverse events associated with ABRAXANE in the randomized metastatic breast cancer study for which FDA approval was based included neutropenia, anemia, infections, sensory neuropathy, nausea, vomiting and myalgia/arthralgia. Other common adverse reactions included anemia, asthenia, diarrhea, ocular/visual disturbances, fluid retention, alopecia, hepatic dysfunction, mucositis and renal dysfunction. For the full prescribing information for ABRAXANE, including Boxed Warning, please visit www.abraxane.com.

ABRAXANE was developed by Abraxis BioScience and is marketed in the United States under a co-promotion agreement between Abraxis and AstraZeneca.

About Biocon Limited

Biocon Limited is India’s pioneer biotechnology enterprise established in 1978. Biocon and its two subsidiaries, Syngene and Clinigene form a fully integrated biotechnology enterprise, with specialized focus on biopharmaceuticals, contract research and clinical research. Strategic international acquisitions, such as acquiring a majority in the German pharmaceutical company, AxiCorp, have given Biocon wider global access and greater market penetration. The company’s robust drug discovery pipeline offers novel therapies on a platform of affordable innovation. Biocon launched the world's first recombinant human insulin, INSUGENâ in November 2004 using Pichia expression and India's first indigenously produced monoclonal antibody BIOMAb-EGFR™ in September 2006. Visit the company at www.biocon.com

About Abraxis BioScience

Abraxis BioScience is a fully integrated global biotechnology company dedicated to the discovery, development and delivery of next-generation therapeutics and core technologies that offer patients safer and more effective treatments for cancer and other critical illnesses.

/India PRwire/ - Chief Minister of Jharkhand Mr. Madhu Korah is blessed with a fortunate child, she gets herself and her family secured from 75 dreaded diseases. Mr. Madhu Korah apart from his political know how justified his parenthood by banking Umbilical cord blood of his daughter with Cryobanks India. “I would prefer each parent should take this decision as it’s once in a lifetime opportunity.” Mr. Ghazi Aasim Marketing Head of Cryobanks India said.

Stem cells are unspecialized cells that have two defining properties: the ability to differentiate into other cells and the ability to self-regenerate. The ability to differentiate is the potential to develop into other specialized cell types. Self-regeneration is the ability of stem cells to divide and produce more stem cells.

Stem cells are the building blocks of various organs and tissues in the body. Stem cells have the remarkable potential to develop into many different cell types in the body. Serving as a sort of repair system for the body, they can theoretically divide without limit to replenish other cells as long as the person or animal is still alive. When a stem cell divides, each new cell has the potential to either remain a stem cell or become another type of cell with a more specialized function, such as a muscle cell, a red blood cell, or a brain cell.

Cryobanks International India is a JV between Cryobanks International Inc., USA and RJ Corp founded in 2006. Cryobanks International Inc., USA is a world leader in the stem cell banking serving since decades. This joint venture has set up the first modern, state-of-the-art cord blood stem cell bank in India at Gurgaon under the leadership of Ms Dhara Jaipuria. It aims to become one of the largest cord blood stem cell bank and a highly specialized training centre in the field of cord blood banking. Cryobanks India will have special focus on research of stem cell therapies as a potential treatment for cardiac diseases and diabetes.

Cryobanks India has set up 28,000 square feet, state-of-the-art stem cell processing and banking facility in Gurgaon. The company provides a facility of collection from all major cities in India.

Source: Press release distribution via India PRwire

/India PRwire/ - The Indian Rotavirus Vaccine Development Project (RVDP) announced today encouraging results from a recent Phase I/II clinical trial of a live, natural reassortant, Oral Rotavirus Vaccine 116E (ORV 116E), conducted in New Delhi, India. RVDP is a collaborative effort with support and guidance from the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India; PATH; US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC); Stanford University; US National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID); Society for Applied Studies; National Institute of Immunology, New Delhi; Indo-US Vaccine Action Program; All India Institute of Medical Sciences and Bharat Biotech International Limited.

Rotavirus infections are the single largest cause of severe diarrheal disease among infants and children worldwide and cause more than 500,000 deaths in infants and children each year, with 90% of these deaths occurring in the world’s poorest countries. Rotavirus diarrhea causes more than 120,000 deaths in India alone.

The Phase I/II trial was designed as a Double-blind Randomized Placebo Controlled Dose Escalating Study of ORV 116E in healthy non-malnourished infants 8-20 weeks of age with safety and immunogenicity as the primary and secondary objectives, respectively. The study was conducted by the Society for Applied Studies in New Delhi.

The doses selected for administration were 104.0 and 105.0 FFU with reactogenicity, immunogenicity and viral shedding as the study endpoints. One-hundred and eighty-seven infants were enrolled for the 104.0 FFU dosage and 182 were enrolled for the 105.0 FFU dosage.

ORV 116E was well tolerated after three administrations with no differences observed in mild, moderate or severe adverse events among vaccine and placebo recipients in both the 104.0 and 105.0 FFU dosages. ORV 116E was immunogenic with 62.1% and 89.7% of the infants seroconverting after three doses of the 104.0 and 105.0 FFU dosages, respectively. These favorable early clinical results are encouraging and warrant further development of ORV 116E as a new rotavirus vaccine for young infants in developing world settings.

Bharat Biotech International Limited Hyderabad is a leading manufacturer of vaccines and biotherapeutics in India. Bharat Biotech has successfully developed the commercial manufacturing, testing and release processes for ORV 116E. The 116E vaccine candidate has undergone extensive characterization and quality control testing at Bharat Biotech and at external agencies abroad. The Phase III clinical trials for ORV 116E are planned to start in 2009.

Source: Press release distribution via India PRwire

Important information about forward-looking statements

Certain statements in this press release may be considered “forward-looking”.

/India PRwire/ - In line with company’s sales strategy to market novel targeted therapies, Intas Biopharmaceuticals will market GEFFY for treatment of Lung cancer especially non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The new drug GEFFY is a class of anti-cancer medications called epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitors. It works by blocking the action of a certain naturally occurring substance that may be needed to help cancer cells multiply.

Intas Biopharmaceuticals is consolidating its presence in the domestic oncology market by focussing on marketing novel therapies and drugs that cater to Solid Tumours, Haematology and Supportive Therapies. Expanding its current portfolio of lung cancer drugs, which comprises of GEMIBINE, CARBOPA, TAXOCARE, and CYTAX, company is eying to grab a major market share in India.

Announcing the marketing launch of GEFFY, Mr. Simon Daniel, Chief Executive, Marketing, Intas Biopharmaceuticals Limited, said, “The introduction of GEFFY in our product basket is going to strengthen our domestic market share for the lung cancer market. With increase prevalence of smoking, lung cancer has reach epidemic proportions in India. It has surpassed the earlier form of cancer that of oropharynx, and now is the commonest malignancy in males. In addition to smoking, occupational exposure to carcinogens indoor air pollution and dietary factors have recently been implicated in the causation of lung cancer.

In view of our large population, the burden of lung cancer will be enormous in India. As of today, drugs, catering to lung cancer, have market potential of approximately Rs. 80 crores in India. With introduction of GEFFY in our product basket, we look to tap nearly 15–20 percent of total lung cancer market in the first year.”

Sharing views on safety and efficacy of GEFITINIB drug, Dr. Vimal Sanghavi, Head (Medical Services), Intas Biopharmaceuticals Limited, said, “Molecular genetics of lung cancer has opened up new vistas of research and targeted anti-cancer therapies are the subject of ongoing research and that offer potential of cancer therapy with minimal side effects. The majority of patients with NSCLC eventually develop metastatic disease or disease that is not amenable to local therapies only and are potential candidates for systemic therapies.

As GEFITINIB is a selective chemotherapeutic agent, its tolerability profile is far superior to previous cytotoxic agents. It has the potential to shrink tumour size, stabilise disease and relieve debilitating symptoms, without the toxic effects of traditional chemotherapy. With already established preclinical studies, GEFITINIB effectively ‘switches off’ EGFR signalling system, which is the system that triggers cancer cells to divide out of control.”

As per recent studies and estimates, more than 90,000 men and 79,000 women are diagnosed each year with cancer of the lungs and bronchi (the air tubes leading to the lungs). Among men, the incidence of lung cancer has been declining, but it continues to increase among women. The number of lung cancer deaths among women surpasses those from breast cancer. Female smokers may be more likely to develop lung cancer than male smokers.

Source: Press release distribution via India PRwire

About Intas Biopharmaceuticals Limited

Starting with a product basket of a few oncology products in 1999, today, Intas Biopharmaceuticals Ltd. can boast of one of the most comprehensive oncology product basket comprising of 26 products in different dosage forms (capsules, injections, tablets and pre-filled syringes). Intas Biopharmaceuticals Limited is the first biotechnology company in India to come out with four biopharmaceutical products and is the only company in Gujarat, which is involved in Research & Development, Manufacturing and Marketing of Recombinant Protein Products related to Oncology (Cancer). Each day, there is a significant addition to these numbers as more patients are benefited from our Oncology and Nephrology products.

In addition to marketing oncology products, through its own team of sales professionals, Intas Biopharmaceuticals Ltd. has entered into several co-marketing and contract manufacturing agreements with leading pharmaceuticals/biotech companies across the country. These agreements include supply/distribution of Biopharmaceuticals products in Oncology and Nephrology segments.

/India PRwire/ - Sharing the marketing plans for MENA region, Mr. Simon Daniel, Chief Executive (Marketing), said, “The supply agreement in Africa gives a strategic advantage to IBPL in strengthening its market position in MENA region and serves the goal of reaching new destinations. The technology strength of IBPL and market intelligence/distribution network of our local partner in Africa can be unified for providing the much-needed boost to establish business rapidly. We are looking forward to more agreements with leading international pharmaceutical/biotech companies in future to expand our market reach of products.

The epidemiological trends of MENA region combined with high population growth, the current socio economical situation along with the improvement of educational level are as many elements in favour, not only of a growing need for biotech products and services in the region in the near future, but also for an equitable access to such products and services.”

With recently announced agreement in North America for Neukine®, IBPL’s reach has extended to every continent and geographical region. This business deal brings together two companies, with complimentary strengths and niche expertise, which will help in launching the first GCSF generic in North America. After EU GMP certification, the entry into semi-regulated markets has become relatively easy for IBPL as the quality conscious Pharma/Biotech companies are assured of superior quality of products and services. Amongst regulated/semi-regulated markets, IBPL offers an edge over its competitors in terms of unique pricing, products, services and its marketing strategy. With unique capabilities of R&D, Manufacturing and Marketing, IBPL has significant presence in Europe, Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Russia & CIS, South and Central America and Africa.

Further elaborating on company’s future prospects, Mr. Simon Daniel said, “IBPL is looking to consolidate its position in the Contract Research and Manufacturing Services (CRAMS) segment. The company has taken up CRAMS opportunity as a focus area with tremendous potential and are preparing to scale up the facilities. With respect to CRAMS, IBPL offers a unique business model for offshore clients from regulated/semi-regulated markets and has competitive advantage in terms of developing new biotech products, technology transfer and contract manufacturing at committed costs, quality and time to create a competitive advantage for the company. With growing business opportunities, IBPL will find itself in the best position to plan certain key initiatives in the coming financial year.”

Speaking on IBPL’s domestic operations, Mr. Daniel said, “In order to give impetus to IBPL’s sales activities, the company plans to launch new sales division BRIDGE catering to Nephrology / Neurology therapeutic areas. IBPL is the only Indian biotech company to manufacture Pegylated GCSF and market it under the brand name Neupeg™. The product offers treatment against toxicity caused due to chemotherapy in cancer patients. This USP has prompted the need for a special and dedicated sales division RELAY. IBPL has doubled its sales force to allow more focussed approach towards niche therapeutic areas of Oncology. Keeping in view the future product pipeline, increasing the sales force is an important step towards strengthening IBPL’s presence in the domestic market.”

Intas entered the Indian anti-cancer market in the year 1998 with the launch of Novatech division (oncology marketing division).

/India PRwire/ - The French government bestowed the award of Officier de L’Ordre National du Mérite (Officer of the National Order of Merit) on Dr. Villoo Morawala - Patell, Founder, CMD of AVESTHAGEN LIMITED at a felicitation ceremony in Bangalore on 23 April 2008. The award conferred by H. E. Mr. Nicolas Sarkozy, Hon’ble President of the Republic of France was presented to Dr. Villoo Morawala--Patell by the Ambassador of France to India, Mr. Jerome Bonnafont

Mr. Jerome Bonnafont in his speech expressed:

“As a woman, as a wife -you married 30 years ago-, as a mother of two daughters, as a scientist and ultimately as a businesswoman, in everything you excel.

Beyond your origins, your success must also be attributed to an unconventional temperament, particularly the tenacity of a scientist and businesswoman who has overcome many barriers and incredulity. How many times have you not knocked at the doors of research chairs and private laboratories in India in order to promote a research and business project based on innovation, risk-taking, multidisciplinarity, and a multi-molecular approach? On each occasion, the doors were opened just a crack, and that is why the scientist also became a company manager.

Your passion for and your contribution to France are expressed in the list of prestigious industrial partners who account for the success of your scientific and entrepreneurial talent : Biomérieux, Danone et Limagrain. It is also visible through your unflagging willingness to speak out and share your experience as a start up in the hi-tech world before the members of the French government (last speech in early 2007 during the India visit of the Minister for Industries), French parliamentarians (parliamentary committees and in December 2008 during the economic seminar at the Senate) and company heads who solicit your advice and experience.”

Accepting the award Dr.Patell observed, “France has always been known to recognize Avant-Garde ideas and people and give them a place in their country and in history. The first country to build its foundation on Liberty, equality and fraternity- strong ideals that were beyond their time.

In science too, long ago France gave a home to the world's first systems biologist Leonardo da Vinci who was ahead of his time but largely went unrecognized in his own home country during his lifetime.

Through his studies on living and non-living forms, from architecture to human anatomy, to turbulence of water and the growth patterns of grasses, he pioneered the empirical, systematic approach to the observation of Nature - what is today known as the scientific method.

Francois Premier (François the First) was able to recognize the talent and vision of the man and hosted him as royal guest at the Château Royal d'Amboise where Leonardo spent his last years. Back in the 16th century France was already supporting the coming to life of some of the most striking scientific, technological and artistic master pieces ever created. “

She further observed, “If India has to lead and succeed in this technology, one has to innovate. It requires institutions, governments and dare-devil entrepreneurs to come together and challenge and break existing dogma. Avesthagen has taken in its business model, Indian Biodiversity, disparate, disjointed events, technologies and opportunities and pieced them together to create the next wave of change in bioNutrition, bioPharmaceuticals, bioAgriculture.”

Source: Press release distribution via India PRwire

About Avesthagen Limited

Avesthagen Limited is India’s leading integrated systems biology platform company that focuses on achieving convergence of food, pharma and population genetics leading to predictive preventive and personalized healthcare.

/India PRwire/ - BIOVET an integrated biotechnology company with the core focus on animal health, cutting edge technologies in research, product development, manufacturing and testing of animal health care products today announced the commissioning of Asia’s first bio safety level 4 (BSL-4) manufacturing facility. This manufacturing facility is located at KIADB-Industrial area in Malur, 30 Kms south of Bangalore.

The manufacturing facility is built adhering to the highest standards of current Good Manufacturing Procedures (cGMP) for vaccines and biologics and most stringent criteria for containment of highly contagious and infectious organisms. The facility is specifically designed to enable product development and manufacturing of vaccines like Foot & Mouth disease vaccine (FMD).

Making the announcement, Dr. Krishna Ella, Chairman of BioVet said “BioVet goal is to address the significant gap in the application of latest technologies for providing health care solutions for small and large animals.” He said “BIOVET’s first product offering, FMD vaccine, is currently in the final stages of development and is slated for commercialization during 2008-2009. Foot and mouth disease in cattle, which is highly contagious and infectious, is known to be airborne with the ability to travel long distances and affects thousands of cattle in the vicinity.”

Foot and Mouth Diseases (FMD) today affects a growing number of cattle, sheep, horses and other cloven footed animals, causing catastrophic economical loss to small, marginal farmers that depend on the animals for their livelihood. Although several countries worldwide have eradicated FMD, it is a major disease problem in India causing significant amount of economic loss especially to the meat and dairy industries, by reducing their domestic sales and exports.

Explaining the uniqueness of the facility, Dr. S N Singh, Managing Director, BioVet said “BIOVET state of the art manufacturing facility meets the highest level of biological safety containment BSL-4.” He adds “Such facilities are required for the development and manufacture of modern biologicals. The containment and safety measures in the facility are the first of its kind in India and second in the world. We have ensured all aspects of the facility, air, water, sewage and biological waste are treated and are completely decontaminated before released into the environment.”

BIOVET’s mission is simple. We want to help the farming community by creating economic prosperity through self employment opportunity. Livestock is an effective instrument for socio economic transformation. BioVet will strive to bring about economic equity by providing animal healthcare products and programmes, which will help farmers, make informed decisions about their livestock and will prevent them from taking extreme measures giving hope and security to all.

BIOVET was founded by Dr. Krishna M.

/India PRwire/ - AVESTHAGEN LIMITED, India’s leading knowledge-based Life Sciences Company and its joint venture partner LIMAGRAIN today announced the launch of an eco-friendly and biodegradable plastic for the Indian market. This biodegradable plastic is manufactured using a process unique, from whole cereal grains, mainly wheat, maize and a number of specific Limagrain varieties. The products innovation lies in the combination of cereal fractions with a biodegradable polymer. Unlike the usual non-degradable plastic material, this alternate plastic introduced by Avesthagen and Limagrain, breaks down and becomes compost in a matter of 120 days in industrial composting conditions under the norm EN13432.

This innovative biodegradable plastic is India’s first product aimed to curb white pollution and the hazards of environmental pollution. Alternate biodegradable materials are the need of the hour, to curb the unimaginable pollution caused by way of plastic bags andother plastic films which stay in our ecology for hundreds of years strangulating cattle and destroying ecology. With an annual usage of over 150 million tons of non-degradable plastic, the twentieth century may well be called the "Plastic Age". Further, as most non-degradable plastic used is from non-renewable resources such as petroleum, our increased consumption of plastic increases our reliance on imported oil as well.

Commenting on this landmark occasion, Dr Villoo Morawala-Patell, Founder, Chairperson & Managing Director, Avesthagen Limited said, “We are extremely glad that our partnership with Limagrain has resulted in the introduction of this alternative plastic material. This is our way of contributing back to the environment we live in. As research and innovation is core to Avesthagen, we would not stop here, but continue our work to introduce more environment friendly products.”

Source: Press release distribution via India PRwire
About Avesthagen Limited
Avesthagen Limited is India’s leading integrated systems biology platform company that focuses on achieving convergence of food, pharma and population genetics leading to predictive preventive and personalized healthcare.
