The Election Commission's Voter ID Card Scheme, facilitated by Andheri East based e-Governance Company Vakrangee Softwares Ltd., has commenced in Borivali East (The Information Centre, Opposite Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Borivali East, Mumbai.) and will continue till January 13, 2008. Vakrangee Softwares, under the guidance of the Election Commission (Central and State Government) officials, has already completed the work successfully in 53 assemblies in Mumbai city and suburbs since the work commenced in February 2007. Vakrangee Softwares Ltd. has already ensured that 35 lakh voters have got their Voter I-Card as of December 25, 2007. The work in the remaining 6 assemblies is expected to be completed by February 2008.
Mr. Neeraj Tandon, Manager, Vakrangee Softwares Ltd. said, "Such an exercise was initiated in Mumbai after nearly a decade. In a period of 10 months, we have covered 53 assemblies till date and also some districts of Thane, Dhule, Nashik and Ahmednagar. The Voter's ID Card Scheme will help to be a key identity proof for the citizens and also prevent bogus voting from taking place. Using state-of-the-art technology, Vakrangee Softwares has provided strong back-end support for the Government officials to fulfill their responsibilities. In certain assemblies, we have set up a permanent desk at the local election commission office so that the voters can collect their ID Card at any convenient time." This last initiative was undertaken in certain suburbs such as Khar, Santacruz and Bandra amongst others.
The Vakrangee Softwares team had distributed invitation slips amongst the voters some days prior to the commencement of the programme on December 27, 2007. The eligible voters have to carry identity proof such as ration card and passport in order to get their voter ID cards. The entire procedure is supervised by the Central and State Government officials whereas Vakrangee Softwares only provides the backend technology. However, those voters, whose names were on the voters' lists, were eligible to get the Voter ID Cards. The others, whose names were not on the voters' lists, have to go through the application procedures as specified by the Election Commission in order to get their names on the voters lists. During the door-to-door campaign, the Vakrangee Softwares team had taken down the names of the new voters in the brown register to be submitted to the Election Commission.
