Australia’s need for skilled workers has ultimately resulted in the growth of the Australian immigration programme, giving even more of a reason for migrants to seek a home down under.

Australia is an ever popular choice for immigration due to their strong economy, temperate climate and work opportunities, particularly with those from Britain wanting a fresh start.

Erin Ryan of the Australian Global Visas (www.globalvisas.com) division states that “Immigration to Australia is a consistently popular ambition in Britain with one in three UK nationals expressing a wish to live and work in Australia.”

The numbear of Britons living in Australia has doubled in the past decade, with reports suggesting that it is the second most popular destination for the English to reside in after Spain. “About 2000 people migrate to Australia per week,” says Ryan (www.globalvisas.com).

Plans have been put into place to speed up this visa scheme. This will enable those skilled in sectors such as medicine or mining, skills in short supply at the moment, to enter the country quicker.

Heather Ridout of the Australian Industry Group points out that this process needs to be fast tracked in order to ease the stress of large work shortages. Therefore groups and unions such as this have welcomed the government initiative to look into the 457 visa programme.

The skilled migration programme will also be extending the numbers of applicants by 6000 places to 108, 500 this year. This need is so apparent that in the housing industry alone it is estimated that 40 000 skilled workers are required in the coming years in order to curb rising housing prices.

Australia has become vehemently aggressive when it comes to luring in skilled workers, with numbers even reflecting migrants earning higher than average wages.

According to a report by the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia the current levels of immigration are still not sufficient in relation to work level meetings. The report therefore recommends a rise of immigration to as many as 227, 000 people by 2021 and 316, 000 by 2051.

Australia has even put into place an attractive package attracting foreign students, who ultimately will become skilled workers in the country. This has become a highly popular option particularly for Indian students. As many as about 35 000 student visas were granted to Indian students in 2006.
