Global Mobility is a revolution that has taken place quietly for the past 20 years and only recently has the world started taking an interest in the effects of global mobility and how it affects immigration, visa laws and its impact on the economic, political and social aspect of industrial and developed countries.
The trend has evolved with globalisation trends in trade, free movement of professionals, technical personnel and in effect globalization has created a world where tighter securities, immigration and visa laws are constantly being introduced to filter out illegal immigrants from the legal. These constant changes have not deterred people from aspiring to work, live, study or travel in different parts of the world in the hope of finding better jobs.
In the past arguably the two most popular countries in the world for migrants have always been the United States of America and the United Kingdom. The US is where dreams are made hence the saying "American dream". This dream has been chased by both natives and outsiders. The UK on the other hand has always seen itself as the perfect example of a country that celebrates diversity, and it has always been a favourite amongst foreign migrants in Europe and outside. Both ideals are now questioned by their foreign recipients because of immigration laws.
Recently, the UK has started changing its immigration and visa laws into the Points Based System (PBS). These changes are the biggest the country has seen in 45 years and they have caused uproar locally and globally with many organisations stating the changes as an infringement of human rights. The Highly Skilled Migrant Visa (HSMP) has now changed into Tier 1 (www.tier12345.co.uk) of the Points Based System (PBS) and according to the Minister of Immigration, Liam Byrne; this is to guarantee that only the right candidates who meet the new requirements can be granted visas into the country. The UK is trying to put a tighter lid on its immigration and at the moment the speculation is that the changes will have a significant impact on skills sectors if the country starts losing more of their foreign skilled workers.
In North America there seem to be two different ideologies playing out between Canada and the United States. Since September 11 the immigration and visa laws have become difficult and visa requirements and airport entry procedures have become unbearable for many travellers branding US immigration officers as "arrogant". According to the Secure Borders and Open Doors Advisory Committee (SBODAC) which was created by the U.S. Departments of State and Homeland Security in 2006, there has been a 17 percent decline in overseas visitation to the United States since September 11, 2001 and this is caused by poor communication of the US to the rest of the world.
The Travel Industry Association (TIA) has recognised the importance of travel in the country and has encouraged the government to set up international advertising for the country. Roger Dow who is President and Chief Executive Officer of TIA and a member of the SBODAC says "The United States is one of the world's only developed countries that refuse to play an active role in attracting international visitors…" People are now looking elsewhere for their "American dream".
While countries such as Australia and Canada are spending a considerable amount of money on settlement programs, advertising and easier immigration laws and visa requirements to entice immigrants to settle in their countries, there is a high shortage of skilled workers in these countries due to their aging population. The government is doing everything to rectify the problem and allow for economic growth.
Ajay Hasija the Regional Director of Global Visas India states "Global Mobility is an important aspect of globalisation and our role as an authority in immigration and visa consultancy is to make our clients dreams come true for a better life by helping them understand the law in which they aspire to be a part of. Governments are being cognizant because they want people to show credibility in their abilities. Yes there are requirements of entry to most countries but they are there in order to make sure that the countries are getting the right skilled workers to benefit the country's economy."
