Intelligent Transport System' Conference and Exhibition 2009
Association for Intelligent Transport System (AITS), India along with Delhi Technological University (DTU) is organizing a "ITS Conference and Exhibition 2009" on December 1-2, 2009
Tweet-- Massive expansion of physical infrastructure relating to surface transport in India requires a major focus on integrating Intelligent Transport System (ITS) into infrastructure development, so as to effectively cater to the need of increased mobility, enhance safety, reduce accident rates and above all solve problems of congestion in mega and metro cities. To explore and discuss how ITS technologies can provide solution to many of our transportation problems like traffic congestion, accidents, emission of toxic gases and so on, Association for Intelligent Transport System (AITS), India along with Delhi Technological University (DTU) is organizing a two-day "ITS Conference and Exhibition 2009", which commenced today at DTU Campus.
The theme of this year's conference is "ITS for Mobility and Safety Management". The inaugural session of the Conference was presided by Mr. Mario Ste Marie, Minister (Commercial) and Senior Trade Commissioner, Canadian High Commission, Mr. Chull Ho Lieu, Chairman of 17th ITS WC, Korea, Dr. S.K. Jason Chang, ITS Taiwan, Mr. Hajimo Amano, President, ITS Japan, Prof. P. B. Sharma, Vice Chancellor, DTU and Mr. Amitabh Bajpai, President, AITS.
Speaking at the occasion, Mr. Marie remarked, "ITS affects the lives of everyone. Incorporating ITS can ensure smooth and safe movement of people and goods. One of the ways we have integrated ITS in Canada is by introducing 'Traveller Information System', where one can dial 511 anywhere in Canada and seek directions. The theme of this year's conference is very apt in Indian context where rapid development in infrastructure and transportation is taking place." In his address, Prof. Sharma emphasized on reducing the pollution generated from the various modes of transportation by introducing green technologies. "It is our responsibility to reduce the harmful emissions generated from the vehicles and tackle the problems of climate change without affecting our mobility. At DTU, we resolve to provide clean fuel and energy technologies, which along with ITS would provide solution to the problems of climate change besides improving transport system efficacy," he added. The conference also highlighted that a fraction of budget of physical infrastructure must necessarily be earmarked for integration of ITS into transport infrastructure.
Some of the areas that were deliberated upon during the sub-sessions were: Integration of Transportation & Sustainable Mobility by ITS; Indo-Canadian Co-operation for ITS development, where a collaborative effort on development and deployment of ITS was proposed, to improve safety and maximize the use and efficiency of a multimodal transport system; Integrated approach in transport modeling for multimodal studies, which highlighted the need for state development programs that promote closer linkages of land use and transportation planning, Road pricing and electronic toll collection and Public transport system. Tomorrow's sessions at the Conference will be on Convergence of Communication and Information Technology Applications in Transport; ITS Safety and Security Solutions, Traveller Information System, and ITS Operations: International Case Studies, besides a roundtable session on ITS and Climate Change. The conference is being attended by national and international dignitaries from countries like Japan, Korea, Canada, UK and Singapore, to mention some.
