Bus Rapid Transit System makes travelling on Delhi roads accessible for all
Bus Rapid Transit System makes travelling on Delhi roads accessible for all New Delhi, 19th March 2008: Delhi Integrated Multi Modal Transit System (DIMTS) is ensuring that the BRT corridor is accessible to every Delhi citizen. The soon to be operational BRT corridor spread on a stretch of 5.6 km in phase I (starting point Ambedkar Nagar and ending point Moolchand) has incorporated many features which make it accessible for all. The corridor has been audited by Samarthyam, National Centre for Accessible Environments. Samarthyam was also part of the 'mock-up' exercise held for the corridor and the low floor buses with dedicated lanes and accessible approach to the shelters to provide user group perspective and promote Universal Designs.

Delhi Integrated Multi Modal Transit System (DIMTS) is ensuring that the BRT corridor is accessible to every Delhi citizen.
Samarthyam was also part of the ‘mock-up’ exercise held for the corridor and the low floor buses with dedicated lanes and accessible approach to the shelters to provide user group perspective and promote Universal Designs.
Commenting on the system, Mr. Manoj Aggarwal, Head of Transport DIMTS said, “The concept of BRTS was designed and devised to empower each and every citizen of Delhi. We have made special efforts to ensure that persons with reduced mobility/ disabilities / visual impairment / hearing impairment have ease and convenience while commuting on the corridor. We are also thankful to Samarthyam for their support and we have ensured that their recommendations have been incorporated to make the BRT corridor easy and convenient to navigate.”
Features that make the corridor accessible for persons with reduced mobility and disabilities:
- Accessible Pedestrian Island – curb ramps and tactile floor tiles provided for pedestrian access:
- Engineering configuration of Floor Tactile Tiles – good combination of ‘guiding path and warning strip’ to orient pedestrians with vision impairment / low vision in open areas
- Boundary wall is well designed and can be used as seating area by pedestrians with reduced mobility
- Hawker zone – good resting spaces
- Street furniture is very well aligned and consistency in placement of Lighting poles, road signages and other amenities
- Tactile files and Braille signages have been provided.
- Levelled areas provide easy access for person using mobility aids (Wheelchair users; walkers; baby prams etc.)
- Good demarcation of auto rickshaw bay
- Well planned segregated lanes for road vehicles, cycle path and pedestrian route
- Signages and route numbers in Braille
- Gentle ramps (1:20 ratio) with handrails and landing has been provided
- Level parking and close parking by buses
- Transit ramps
- Minimum walkway of 2 metres
- Passenger information systems to aid visually impaired and persons with hearing disabilities
- Color contrast approach to bus shelters and buses
- Wheelchair clasping inside the buses
- Audio announcements and visual display of information inside the buses
According to Mr. Sanjeev Sachdeva, Founder Member, Samarthyam, “We appreciate the efforts of DIMTS that has made the dream of accessible transportation for the public a reality through the BRTS. We have been actively involved in studying this corridor and have given our suggestions to DIMTS on a regular basis. DIMTS has considered the specific requirements for differently - abled persons that would allow them from travelling comfortably.
“The new buses that would be plying on the BRT corridor will have low floors and would also be equipped with a ramp to enable people to board and disembark conveniently. In addition, these buses would also have reserved space to accommodate wheelchairs apart from having audio announcements and digital display for the hearing and visually impaired” he further added.
Ms. Anjlee Agarwal, a user with reduced mobility said, “Such an initiative would not only instil a sense of independence and self-reliance in the differently abled but also set a strong precedence for other transport related agencies/institutions and organisations to follow.”

BRT Corridor
BRT corridor is an exemplary effort by the government of NCT Delhi and DIMTS to promote inclusive and people friendly designs in urban transportation infrastructures. BRT is fast, convenient and accessible as it combines the advantages of rail transit with flexibility of bus service. A feature that the BRT busses have to their credit is of being environment friendly. The increase in efficiency of vehicular flow will induce people to shift to buses from their personal vehicles. This will result in a fall in the number of vehicles on the roads and further curb the emission levels.
