In 1907, Indian-born Rudyard Kipling won the Nobel Prize for Literature, and Finland became the first European country to give women the right to vote. Meanwhile, quietly in a tiny Seattle office on the U.S. Pacific coast, two teenagers named Jim Casey and Claude Ryan began the American Messenger Company with a US$100 loan.
These humble beginnings one century ago were the first days of UPS, which is now the world’s largest package delivery company. Serving more than 200 countries and territories, UPS operates the world’s eighth-largest airline, a fleet of almost 92,000 vehicles and offers an ever-expanding array of supply chain services. The company is one of the world’s largest employers; there are now 427,000 UPSers around the world.
“Today, on our 100th anniversary, we celebrate the people of UPS who have contributed to our shared success throughout the years, from drivers in Hamburg to pilots in Hong Kong and everyone in between,” said Mike Eskew, Chairman and CEO of UPS. “UPS’s success is the result of the combined efforts of thousands of UPS employees who share a deep commitment to our customers. It is their dedication that will carry UPS well into our next century.”
UPS has consistently adapted itself to new business models, new technologies and new markets. Success at UPS has always come from serving the customer in a better, more reliable fashion, and in running its operations in the most efficient way possible. UPS customers have been instrumental in creating the world’s most trusted and respected package delivery operation and given it the credibility to expand into new capabilities.
Over the 100 years, UPS has transformed itself from its early beginnings of being a department store delivery service to a trusted business partner that literally enables commerce for its customers by synchronizing the flow of goods, information and funds.
UPS in India combined with its global network has its focus directed towards driving an era of ‘synchronized commerce’ to provide its customers with a single point of contact for all their supply chain needs.
Said Pirojshaw Sarkari, Managing Director, UPS Jetair Express Pvt. Ltd., “We are proud of our legacy and commend the efforts of our employees globally towards driving a century of success. Through the 100 years we have undergone several transformations by continually reinventing ourselves to create the right relevance of service to the customer. India is one of the younger markets in UPS’s global network, making it twice as exciting and challenging to drive the success story forward. ”
UPS Jetair Express was selected as the Best U.S. Company operating in the Manufacturing and Other Services Category at the 2007 Indo-American Corporate Excellence (I-ACE) Awards.
