Run, Thane, run (For the Golden Jubilee of Maharashtra)
Countdown begins for Maharashtra's biggest sporting event - the Thane Mayor Varsha Marathon, 2010
Tweet-- Countdown has begun for India's third oldest marathon - the Thane Marathon i.e. Thane Mayor Varsha Marathon (TMVM), 2010. Maharashtra's one of the biggest sport events, is slated to take place on July 18, 2010.
Incidentally, the TMVM is unique in many ways. It is world's only monsoon marathon and is going strong in its 21st year. This year, TMVM theme is to celebrate Maharashtra's 50 years showcasing the sporting spirit of its people.
Though still a month away, preparations for TMVM are in full swing. This time around, hundreds of sport enthusiasts have already started training for the run. One can easily spot the young and old jogging around the city lakes and jogging park for their preparation. Such is the connect of the people with this event that July is now known as marathon month by the people across the state.
Like each passing year, 2010 Marathon will also witness tough competition from athletes across the state. Keeping its promise of getting bigger and better every passing year, TMVM is getting richer - offering an enhanced prize money of Rs 5,00,000 to this year's winners.
In a press conference called on Thursday to announce the Marathon, Thane Mayor Shri. Ashok Vaiti said, "The Thane Mayor Varsha Marathon is a perfect training ground for many athletes, not only from the Thane district, but across the state as hundreds of regular and new participants join the run every year. With the prize money hike this year, I'm sure the number would definitely increase."
Commenting on the event, Shri. Satish Pradhan, President, Thane Marathon Trust, said, "I have witnessed ocean of top professional runners and sport enthusiasts participating in TMVM every year. Keeping in mind with the emotions of these runners, this year we are taking the Marathon to next level. I am extremely happy to announce that we will have a media centre that will provide all updated information on the marathon on daily basis. We are also planning a Marathon Week before the D'day on July 18."
The promising 21st year of TMVM 2010 has various categories like:
- The first category which falls under TMVM is for children under the age of 14 years, this age group kids have to cover 3kms to reach the finish line.
- The second category is for less than 20 years youngsters boys who will run for 10kms and girls under 18 years who will cover 7kms.
- Third is MAHARASHTRA STATE GOLDEN JUBILEE YEAR RUN round where the runners have to cover 2kms to reach the finish point.
- Full Marathon (42.195Kms) run for men athletes and Half Marathon (21kms) race for women athletes.
