"Accountability in Non Profits - a Donors Perspective"
Heads of leading International Funding Bodies meet to deliberate on ways to address the issues of accountability and credibility of Indian NGOs
Tweet-- Taking note of the issue of accountability and transparency that are impacting the very existence of non profits in the country, The Resource Alliance in partnership with The Rockefeller Foundation & Credibility Alliance organised a Funders Forum here today.
Talking on the subject, Mr.Mathew Cherian, Managing Trustee, The Resource Alliance said, "Accountability and fundraising go hand in hand. Good work is important but unless an organisation is perceived as being ethical and well governed it will not get the local support that non profits like HelpAge India and CRY enjoy."
NGOs today are forced to introspect and look at the local communities for supporting their programmes. The Forum acted as an eye opener for all non profits, driving home the point that without credibility it is very difficult to raise funds especially from the individual donor groups- support from whom is imperative for sustainability of any organisation. It brought together heads of leading international bodies. Mr. Ashvin Dayal, Managing Director-Asia, The Rockefeller Foundation, Ms. Poonam Muttreja, Country Director, Macarthur Foundation, Mr. Ajay Mehta, Executive Director, NFI, Dr. Muhammad Musa, Country Director, CARE, Ms. Nisha Agrawal, CEO, Oxfam India and Mr. Mohammad Haleem Khan, Director General, CAPART, were some of the eminent panellists who deliberated upon the issue of credibility among NGOs in India and effective and ethical fund raising among NGOs in India and the role of donors in the same.
The voluntary sector in India is large with over 1.2 million non-governmental organisations (NGOs). The sector, over the years, has proven to do great work and has some star organisations in the country. However, most of the NGOs in India still face an uphill challenge of proving their credibility amongst the general public and companies and subsequently raise funds to support themselves and their projects. They need to demonstrate results and be more transparent and accountable to its stakeholders.
