An end-to-end water and livelihoods solution for AP villages

Launch of a new pilot to ensure every rural household gets the benefit of clean drinking water, of water for irrigation, of healthier lives and of better livelihoods Naandi Foundation, Winrock International, and the The Coca-Cola Foundation, U.S.A to partner in this pilot Partnership to showcase an innovative new model of water access known as "Multiple Use water Services" aimed at providing safe drinking water and water for productive uses to improve health, income and food security of the rural poor. The project will identify best practices for wide scale replication.

Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, January 30, 2009 /India PRwire/ -- Aiming to achieve sustainable and equitable changes in health, income generation and food security among small rural communities, Naandi Foundation, Winrock International and The Coca-Cola Foundation, based in Atlanta U.S will collaborate to launch an 18 month “multiple-use water services” demonstration initiative in Andhra Pradesh.

The project aims to:

  • Provide reliable access to water for domestic and productive activities in rural communities impacting 1050 households (more than 5,000 people)

  • Improve health, nutrition, food security and social empowerment of the targeted households

  • Increase annual income of the target group by at least 20% per year

  • Develop a model for wide scale replication across the country


The Coca-Cola Foundation based in Atlanta, Georgia USA has approved a grant of USD 250,000 for initial support of the initiative.

According to Mr Amit Jain, COO and head of the Drinking Water and Sanitation vertical Naandi Foundation, “This initiative builds on Winrock International and Naandi Foundation’s expertise using innovative market-based approaches to achieve sustainable and equitable improvements in health, income and food security for poor smallholders. Naandi Foundation has already undertaken projects using market based approaches to providing access to safe drinking water to poor rural smallholders, linking organic coffee growing tribal small farmers to global markets and using natural resource management techniques and revitalizing defunct irrigation schemes in partnership with local communities, private donors and the government.

According to Dr. Mary Renwick, Director, Water Innovation Program, Winrock International, “Winrock brings an innovative new model of water service delivery known as Multiple-Use Services (MUS). The MUS approach builds on, and adds value to, investments in community domestic water systems or irrigation systems and has tremendous potential to simultaneously improve smallholder health and incomes.”
