Mahan Coal Ltd. celebrates World Environment Day with Tree Plantation and a Children's Awareness Program

On the occasion of World Environment Day, Mahan Coal has committed itself to responsible environmental conduct and young talent development.

Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh, June 10, 2014 /India PRwire/ -- With an aim to encourage local talent and spread awareness about the environment among villagers of Amiliya, Suggo and Budher, the company organized an Art and Essay competition for school students on the occasion. As many as 90 students from the government school, from class 1 to 8 participated in the competition. The theme of the competition was caring for the environment. The winners were felicitated by Mahan Coal.

Employees of Mahan Coal also celebrated World Environment Day by planting saplings at the VTC Centre, Singrauli. The company also distributed hundreds of free saplings among villagers including Mango, Jackfruit, Aamla and Lemon.

Commenting on the World Environment Day celebrations, Mr. Ramakant Tiwari, CEO, Mahan Coal Ltd. said, "As a responsible corporate citizen, we are trying to make school students aware of environmental issues so that they become responsible citizens of tomorrow and help in conserving the environment. Additionally, we want to send a clear message that the company is committed to sustainable and inclusive development while caring for Mother Nature."

As part of its forest regeneration programme, Mahan Coal Ltd. will plant 68 lakh trees in the coal block during the project tenure of 14 years. As per the regeneration plan, the company will plant 19 trees for every tree felled to maintain the ecological equilibrium in the Mahan Coal Block area along with the Forest Department. The reforestation program will be carried out both at the mining site in Singrauli and additionally at a barren land in Sagar.

The tree plantation is planned in a phased manner and entails planting approximately twenty times more trees during the entire period of the project.
