Chandigarh, Punjab, August 26, 2013 /India PRwire/ -- Chandigarh Chapter of The Company of Master Mariners of India (CMMI) honoured the 'First Seafarer' and the 'First IAS Officer' to scale Mt Everest, Ravindra Kumar, at CII.

Mr. K.K. Sharma, Advisor to the Administrator of UT Chandigarh was the chief guest on the occasion who complimented Sh. Ravindra Kumar for his unusual accomplishment that is a tribute to his physical endurance and composed demeanour, and definitely an inspiration for others.

Mr. Sharma presented a citation and a replica of Harmandir Saheb to him on behalf of CMMI- Chandigarh Chapter, and said that Ravindra Kumar's journey so far indeed appears very exciting and romantic from shipping to administrative services to climbing the highest peak in the world.

Mr. Ravindra Kumar provided an audiovisual journey of his expedition to Mt. Everest that portrayed the courage that one needs to accomplish one's dream.

It was during my stint at sea as a mariner that I thought of working in mountains and when I got selected in the civil services I opted for a hilly terrain as one of my first options and ultimately got the Sikkim cadre in 2011, he said.

But it was an earthquake in Sikkim when administration had to seek the help of trained mountaineers to reach the people in need, which was turning point for him to go in for professional mountaineering course in order to ensure relief at the grassroot level in eventuality of a crisis.

Responding to a question from the audience on how one could reach the highest mountain and succeeding in first attempt, Ravindra Kumar said that human body has immense unutilised potential that one can harness just by visualising the achievement at first instance in one's mind and than working towards realising it.

Earlier CMMI Chapter chairman Capt M.S. Kahlon said that it was a matter of great pride for the CMMI that one of their fellow seafarer has not only successfully entered the prestigious administrative services while sailing, and then aspired and successfully conquered Mt Everest.

Sh. Ravindra Kumar who is a 2011 batch IAS officer of Sikkim cadre is presently posted as Assistant Collector cum Executive Magistrate of East District. Born and brought up in Begusarai district of Bihar, though he cleared IIT JEE in top honours, instead of joining IIT, he decided go through merchant navy route to achieve his target of entering IAS.

Sh. Ravindra Kumar who had been a sportsman right from his college days where he won several tournaments as a swimmer and acquired black-belt in karate, he indulged in SCUBA diving, skin diving, horse riding, river rafting, bungy jumping to name just a few.
