"Divided Colours Of A Nation"- A documentary film by Umesh Agarwal

Screening of "Divided Colours Of A Nation" A documentary film directed by well known Delhi based director Umesh Aggarwal will be held on 13th September 2008 at Stein Auditorium, India Habitat Centre, New Delhi. It is part of PSBT's Open Frame International Film festival that will continue from12th to 20th September.

New Delhi, Delhi, September 8, 2008 /India PRwire/ -- “Divided Colours Of A Nation is a 60 minute film in English focusing on “Caste - Based Reservation”, an issue that seems to dividing India than ever before. The film not only scans the concept of caste based reservation since it made an entry into the constitution and its usage as a political tool over the years, but also looks into the status of education in the country.

The Screening of the film will be followed by an open forum. Chief panelists are: Mr. Sukhdeo Thorat (Chairman UGC) a supporter of Reservation, Prof. Dipankar Gupta (Social scientist) who has followed the issue for many years, Prof. Indiresan, he has been involved with the court cases against Reservation. Youth For Equality & PMSF will be other participants. Youth For Equality is the umbrella organization for all who are against reservation, while PMSF is for reservation. Other groups like Social Jurist & Pardarshita (working in the field of Education) will also be there.

One of the biggest challenges India faces today is to create an equitable society.76% of Indian Population falls under the categories of OBC, SC and ST. Only 12% of Indian Population is Upper Caste, while Muslims and others make up for another 12%. The data suggests that 12% has ruled over 76% for centuries. Now, when the majority wants to obliterate the injustice committed for centuries, the solutions are not easy to find. Reservation for backward castes is currently the most contentious issue.Educated young peoplein urban India are out on streets, up in arms, against any policy that reserves seats in education institutes on the basis of castes.

The film tracks the entire chronology of this issue, starting from the very first constitutional amendment when the government empowered itself to make special arrangements for SCs & STs. Through this miasma of Caste Based reservation, the film also looks at the education system in India. The film makes surprise visits to government run schools in Delhi, Rajasthan (Up to Indo Pak Border) & Uttar Pradesh. and exposes the terrible state of education where a 4th standard student doesn’t even know the name of his school.

The film is not pro or against reservation but it does say when there is disparity at the level of grass root education, what is the use of reservation. Then the film takes us to another spectrum of the issue, whether the creamy layer of the scheduled castes, tribes and other backward castes should get the benefit of reservation. Umesh has taken into account diverse points of views without being judgmental. The film also points out how the number of castes has increased in the last six decades with the demand for reservation.

.Umesh’s last film “The Whistle Blowers” was awarded the National Award last year. It was a film on pesticides on packaged water & soft drinks. He is also producing a film” Underground Inferno” for National Geographic Channel, that will be released in November in 130 countries in 25 languages.
