JD Institute of Fashion Technology Presents the JD Annual Design Awards 2009-10

JD Institute of Fashion Technology, Bangalore's leading fashion technology institute is today presenting the Annual Design Awards 2009-10 to showcase the creations of the graduating students.

Choreographed by Rahul Dev Shetty, the creations will be showcased by leading professional models from Bangalore at a fashion event held at Hotel Chancery Pavilion on Wednesday, May 19, 2010. The theme for this year's annual design awards is "YOU." The event will bring together many renowned names from the fashion/film industry, garment buying houses and the apparel industry. The event also saw the formal unveiling of the new look of JD Institute.

Speaking about JD's Annual Design Awards, Mr. Nealesh Dalal, Managing Trustee, JD Institute of Fashion Technology says, "Today the opportunities in fashion are numerous. The world is witnessing a fashion revolution and it has touched our doorsteps. This is quite evident with the changing trends in today's fast moving life and adaptive multi cultural lifestyle which we all lead. That is the reason why we came up with this theme and encouraged JDiiians to create what they have been inspired by to put together their Annual Design Collection."

Designers and their collections:
Designer Malavika Manay's collection is based on the theme "Resort wear" and the concept is based on the reality TV show "Beach Wear" where one is taken around the world to explore different beach destinations. The designer has chosen Coral and Raya Islands (Thailand) as her inspiration and taken elements from the island such as the famous fan and fire corals and ripples of the ocean. The main lead of the collection is a mix of leisure wear and vivid lounge wear and the comfort wear comprises of exaggerated and moderate silhouettes. The fabrics used are silk, chiffon, linen, and cotton and shell embellishments and a bit of extravagance by using silk and chiffon. This collection caters to a woman of 30, a socialite filled with opulence and luxuries that get her anywhere in the world.

Deepika Jain's and Aseema Zeba's "Fear Factor" collection is inspired by the reality show "fear factor," where the contestants are placed in uncomfortable situations and are expected to overcome their fears through their bold and daring attitude. Through their collection, the designers have depicted their bold and daring attitude with the shades of black, silver, grey, red, brown, yellow. To depict the boldness, they have used textures of reptile skin, bark of wood, mesh effect on fabrics like denim, leather along with armours. The collection is for those in the age group of 23 to 26 who works in the Aviation industry, who likes taking risks in life and loves challenges. They are healthy people, who normally don't experiment a lot with their looks. They love to hang out with friends in casual environments therefore they do not ways spend much time in dressing up.

Designers Roshni and Payal's collection is on the theme "Gamble your emotions" and is inspired by the show "The Casino," the unscripted drama series by Mark Burnett. The designers were inspired by the emotions of fear, stress, joy, anxiety, confusion, regret etc. which makes the show addictive and these emotions are depicted in the collection. The silhouette is slim fit and the colour palette mainly includes red, green, deep purple, white, black, grey and golden. The texture of the fabric is mostly soft, breezy, layered for the women's wear and stiff and rough fabrics for men's wear. The collection are for those in the age group of 30-35- socialites with an entrepreneurial bent of mind, who are well settled and enjoy meeting new people, leading a luxurious life.

Victorian Glamour is the theme for the collection by the designers Vinita Heda, Ankita, Bharathi. The concept is based on the Reality show "Tim Gunn's Guide to Style". In the show, Tim Gunn uses his style expertise to help ordinary people maximize their fashion potential and to emerge with a glamorous and stunning look. The designers have taken guidance from the show to create glamorous garments and elements from the Victorian era have been used to glamorize the garments. The collection caters to upper middle class and urbane women and comprises of glamorous evening wear gowns and dresses of various lengths.

The theme of designers Soujanya and Deepa collection is "Adventure" and is inspired by the reality show 'Crocodile Hunter', presented by Steve Irwin. The main purpose of show was to convey to the people about the preservation and knowledge about endangered species and also spreading awareness of these species. The designers have derived a collection of safari wear using the colours tint and shades of green, orange and fluorescent green. The textures used are rough texture, wood textures including quilting. This collection is designed for the people of the age 26- those who are daring and enjoy adventures, those who love to take care of pets, those who practice yoga and love nature, wild life photography and love reading books.

Designer Shraddha's collection Maya is inspired, from the Mayan civilization. As the Mayan people wore their garments which were rectangular and not fitted and were completely hand woven, the designer has tried to bring in the same concept of weaving garments with an A line silhouette and a little fitted. The designer has taken the elements from the glyphs and used it in an abstract way to enhance the garments. The collection is for those in the age group of 20-30 yrs. The collection is such that it is wearable for any occasion and any time of the day, whether it is a brunch or an evening soiree. The colours are also derived from the Mayan civilization where they used Maya blue which is turquoise blue and shades from the semi precious stone jade green.

The theme of Designer Roshni M's collection is "Capparell," inspired by coffee. The designer has interpreted the moods and emotions and the attitude through the garments to give it a funky, whacky and grunge look. This collection is meant for men and women between the age group of 18-35 yrs, who love to be unique in every way and love the attention that they get. The collection is a formal wear collection which includes silhouettes that are asymmetric and fitted and jackets along with luminous pants and Capri's for women's. For men, it includes fitted asymmetric shirts, vests and jackets along with slim-fit trousers.

Designer Eisha Arora's Harmony collection tries to create awareness among the present generation about the cruelty done to animals for selfish needs. The designer through her collection wants to bring out a certain sense of harmony between man and animals and change the attitudes and practices of the people. This concept is being brought out through extensions in the garments that relate to certain aspects of animals and how they blend in with the human form creating a sense of oneness.

"Imperfect World" is the theme of Designer Shifa Shareef's collection. The world according to the designer is imperfect and pretentious and believes that nothing is perfect other than the creator. The man in his entire life process is just trying to be perfect and make things perfect by wearing masks and hiding his imperfections rather than being himself. They do this to be a part of the world or be how the world wants them to be.

Designer Shruti Kulkarni is presenting her collection on the theme "KALA." KALA is an evening wear collection for the Plus Size women/girls, who need to break away from all their negative thoughts & feelings about themselves as well as their bodies. This collection will cater to the needs of these girls/women of age group 20-45 years. Kala's inspiration is "art deco." Art Deco design is influenced by geometric shapes & forms. The style & the look of this art is elegant, glamorous, modern which has been brought into the collection as well.

This collection would give the wearer a sleek, sophisticated and streamlined look which every plus size women would look for. The silhouettes for this collection are dresses with the use of very unusual fabrics like silk, satin, georgette. The colours for this collection are violet, wine, olive green and black.

Amazon is the theme for Designer Deepa Patel's collection and it draws inspiration from the adventure show 'Survivor man'. The theme for the collection is 'Amazon Rainforest' in South America. The textures on the garments have drawn inspiration from the different types of vegetation found in the typical rainforest. The outfits, designed capture the richness associated with tropical rainforest aptly by using raw silk with rich shades of green and brown. The shade most prominently visible in the rainforest, the pines of coniferous trees are all, well captured through green thin line patches. This collection is designed for the girl's age group between 18 - 25 and is largely classified as street wear.
