Abhivyakti - A Celebration Of Life Through Dance

NCPA presents a rare and exciting blend of Kathak & Odissi by distinguished dancer Yogini Gandhi

Mumbai, Maharashtra, July 19, 2010 /India PRwire/ -- The National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), India's premier arts and culture institution, presents Abhivyakti ─ a unique performance that features two dance forms: Kathak and Odissi - by renowned dancer Yogini Gandhi on July 23, 2010, at the Dance Theatre Godrej, NCPA. Accompanying her will be two senior students from her dance school, Kalanidhi.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms Amrita Lahiri, Head ─ Programming (Indian Dance), NCPA, says, "For beginners and connoisseurs, it will be an opportunity to see the beauty of the two forms, presented by Yogini Gandhi. This performance will provide an insight into their similarities and differences in movement, music, and choreographic structures. Yogini is one of the very few Indian dancers, who have mastered two classical dance forms, and has received guidance from two legendary dancers in Indian classical dance ─ Kelucharan Mohapatra in Odissi and Birju Maharaj in Kathak."

The grace and the dexterity of Yogini's performance promises to bring to life the royal splendour of the Mughal courts, as well as the temple sculptures from Orissa. This recital aims to highlight the distinctive beauty of each dance form, through a mélange of solo pieces and duets, without compromising on the integrity of either.

Yogini has performed at some of the most prestigious festivals in India like the Sawai Gandharva Mahotsav, Ellora Festival, Kathak Kendra Mahotsav. In addition to her performances receiving critical acclaim and appreciation from audiences, both in India and abroad, she has been felicitated by her very own guru (one among the many honours she has earned) and has been conferred the title of 'Singaar Mani'. She has presented dance concerts and lecture demonstrations in the USA, Australia, Sweden, Denmark etc.
