-- Joining the band wagon of ‘realistic cinema’ directors, the young and dynamic MohitSuri has gone where no one has dared to go before. Recent reports of racism ina developed nation against Indian’s residing there which shocked the wholeworld forced Mohit to prove the idiom of ‘Art imitates life’ right. What betterway to highlight the grave problems faced by Indian’s abroad than by showing itin a true-to-life movie adaptation? In a recent press conference held at thehub of tinsel-town (Mumbai) on 16th September, 09. Mohit announcedhis ambitious plans to make a film on racial discrimination with Indiansabroad. Mohit will be heading to the country which started it all, Australia, for some research on the subject and to meet the victims of assault first-hand.On his trip, Mohit will also be finalizing locations for his films shooting.
Onasked if his film was a dig at the ‘whites’, Mohit vehemently denied the claimsand said, “Racism is a Universal issue and concerns everyone on the globe. I amnot attempting to demonize or victimize anyone. We are just attempting to tella story based on facts which are open to interpretation.” Mohit’sobvious choice for a lead in his film is Emraan Hashmi who plays the mainprotagonist in the film through whose eyes the story is narrated. Atopic like this is very controversial but that didn’t dissuade young Mohit frompicking it up. The news of Indian’s being assaulted abroad was enough to persuadehim to be the change he wishes to see in the world. In order to best depict thecondition of our fellow country-men, he decided to raise the topic on the bigscreen and show the reality of the situation to the audience. Talkinganimatedly in the press meet, Mohit said that even though the media has hypedthe incidents to some extent but the bottom line is that discrimination in anyshape or form is a harsh reality of this world. He was very touched by thesupport being given to the victims by not only Indians but people everywhere. His film, he says will talk about how people come together in the face ofadversity. It is amazing to see such great thought come from someone at such ayoung age even though he personally wasn’t witness to the atrocities himself.
Mohit made hisdebut with Zeher (2005), starring Emraan Hashmi, Udita Goswami and ShamitaShetty which was a trend-setter of sorts and gave rise to many movies made onthe same storyline. It was followed by Kalyug which was another big success andbecame a hit for its music as well. He directed Kangna Ranaut and Shiney Ahujain Woh Lamhe (2006), reportedly based on the tragic life of the late actressParveen Babi.
