Mani Shankar to inaugurate WAVES Summer 2009 at BITS Pilani, Goa Campus

These compelling lines should set the tone for BITS Pilani Goa Campus’s three- day national-level cultural festival, WAVES Summer 2009, slated for March 6th-8th at the Institute in Zuari Nagar, South Goa.
Bollywood director (16 December, Rudraksh) and BITS Pilani alumnus, Mani Shankar, will open the cultural extravaganza at the Inaugural Ceremony on the 6th, which will also feature performances by the in-house Dance and Fine Arts clubs at BITS.
Besides over 36 events in categories like Music, Dance, Drama, Literary and Fine Arts, Waves Summer 2009 boasts of a series of Workshops that will be conducted by experts in the respective fields. Lourde Vijay’s dance troupe (OPUS) from Bangalore will conduct Salsa, Bachata, Hip-hop and Belly Dancing Workshops while one of India’s most popular chefs, Tarla Dalal, will hold a unique Cookery Workshop with special tips for hostel cooking. Photography, Pottery, Tarot Card Reading and Ceramic Art are among the other workshops that will be held during the three days.
As for the special performances lined up, they promise that “the nights will be an outburst of celebration” and how! DJ Ivan from Bangalore will kick-start this celebration on Day One with his pulsating and diverse beats and Saturday, March 7th will see the famous contemporary fusion band, Indian Ocean, enthuse the crowd with their jazz-spiced rhythms and profound, phenomenal sound.
iBIBO Sea Rock 2009, the biggest semi-professional Rock Competition in the region, will see 20 bands from all over the country battle it out for the three days for prizes amounting to Rs. 80,000. The Grand Finale on Day Three will feature Rainbow Bridge, an award-winning band from Chennai, and their musical mixture of Funk, Blues and Rock ‘n’ Roll, with an Indian flavour running through it.
MTV VJ Ayushmaan and MTV Splitsvilla participants Varun and Prianca will visit the campus to judge the Haute Couture and Dance Competitions. Richard Tholoor and Sneha Kapoor-the first Indian couple to win the ESPN World Salsa Championship will turn up the heat at WAVES SUMMER 2009 on 6th March. The band, Tough on Tobacco, the erstwhile Zero, will also be putting on a live show for the festival.
WAVES 2009 has LG Mobile as its title sponsor and it also boasts of sponsorship from ibibo.com, MTV, Reebok, Radio Mirchi, mobee.in and Dell among others. All in all, the 36 events, eight workshops, big acts like Indian Ocean and prize money and goodies worth Rs. 7 lakhs fit right in with Waves Summer 2009’s tagline ‘India’s Hottest Cultural Festival!’
