Infineon and NavSemi Deliver Innovative Next-Generation Solar Charge Controllers For India Market

Infineon and NavSemi have announced the availability of Sun Flower solar charge controller based on Infineon's low-power, 8-bit XC800 MCU, which supports multiple serial interfaces including I2C, UART, SPI and SSP. The Energy Maximizer architecture provides up to 97 percent system efficient power extraction in solar photovoltaic PV applications and 25 percent improvement in battery charge

Bengaluru, Karnataka, September 8, 2010 /India PRwire/ -- At the Electronica India 2010 tradeshow in Bangalore (Sep 7 - 10, 2010), Infineon Technologies and NavSemi announced the availability of Sun Flower - a solar charge controller with an Energy Maximizer architecture delivering up to 97 percent system efficient power extraction in solar photovoltaic (PV) applications and improving battery charge by up to 25 percent. The Sun Flower solar charge controller incorporates Infineon's state of the art XC800 real-time microcontroller (MCU), voltage regulators, and CoolMOS™ and NavSemi's patent pending MCPTTM (Maximum Current Point Tracking) algorithm. Targeted solar photovoltaic (PV) applications are for example solar battery charge controllers and micro-converters

NavSemi's highly flexible Energy Maximizer solution is based on Infineon's low-power, 8-bit XC800 MCU, which supports multiple serial interfaces including I2C, UART, SPI and SSP. The XC800 features hardware functions needed in PV applications, including voltage and current measurement, as well as panel parameter configuration, with the ability to send an output signal to control external switching. To further simplify development and maximize system efficiency, the XC800 is available with its Digital Application Virtual Engineer (DAVE) software with auto-configure settings for MCU with a simple GUI. The XC800 ADC gives high accuracy over the full temperature range from -40 °C to 150 °C with a conversion time of <1.5us. The XC800 offers up to 64 KB of flash memory for application software, as well as flash Code Read Protection (CRP) to safeguard user-developed code.

"NavSemi is focusing on intelligent and precision control to improve energy harvesting and conversion efficiency. The Sun Flower in addition provides options for remote communication and control for reporting and managing the system offering intelligent solutions for application areas such as Home and Street lighting," said Mr. Babu Jain, founder and CEO for NavSemi.

"Microcontrollers are essential in providing the functionalities and performance with real-time embedded control algorithms while further improving system safety and reliability. The XC800 is supported by development tools from Keil, Tasking and In-fineon Eclipse base free tool chain. Infineon also offers an easy-to-use, comprehen-sive development tool kit." said Mr. Andy Wong, Regional Marketing for Industrial Microcontrollers at Infineon Technologies Asia. "Infineon MCU and power devices have well fitted roadmaps for India's rapid development in energy efficient industry."

Infineon holds the global number-one market position in semiconductor discrete and modules for power electronics, and according to IMS Research's 2009 report, Infineon enjoys a 10.2 percent share of a total market worth around 13.96 billion US dollars.
