Pune, Maharashtra, October 30, 2009 /India PRwire/ -- A 2 day national level seminar on Sustainable Technologies” on Air Conditioning and Cold Chain ACR TrendZ 2009 being organized by ISHRAE(Indian society of Heating Refrigeration & Air-conditioning Engineers), Pune Chapter, in association with ASHRAE Western India & Pune chapters was inaugurated here today.

The two-day seminar was inaugurated by M.P. Agarwal, President ISHRAE HQ and the keynote address on ‘Green Factories’ was delivered by Pradeep Bhargava, M.D, Cummins Generator Technologies India Ltd.

Users, designers, and manufacturers of the systems, from India & abroad, will discuss current topics like two-stage air cooling (which is a possible replacement to Air-conditioning), Strategies for reducing power consumption, Green Cold Chain, etc at the seminar .

Mr. Harshal Surange President - ISHRAE Pune Chapter said that ISHRAE, was working in pursuit of creating sustainable technologies (or ‘Green’ technologies), to make the world a better living place. ISHRAE is an affiliate of ASHRAE, the American society which operates at the international level serving the HVAC&R community, informed

Speaking on the importance of Air conditioning, refrigeration and Cold Chain , he said that these systems, today, are integral parts of present day human life. Air conditioning creates not only the comfort for humans but meets several important process needs, of the industry & commerce.

Refrigeration & Cold Chain are technologies for preservation of foods, medicines, vaccines & several other industrial processes. Cold chain is particularly important for India, where about 30% of perishable produce including fruits & vegetables is wasted due to lack of proper handling, processing & storage facilities.

These systems are highly energy intensive & their operations as estimates have put that 35% of the world’s energy produced is consumed by air conditioning & refrigeration related processes.

It is obvious that this has a huge impact on the environment. There are also impacts due to the types of the refrigerants used, water usage for larger plants etc and that has to be studied in details and reduced to great extent .

Adding Mr Arvind Surange President Emeritus of ISHRAE Pune Chapter and a leading consultant said that Pune is the “Refrigeration Capital” of India. With major players in the field of Refrigeration & Air conditioning like Kirloskar Pneumatic, Thermax, Alfa Laval has been there for almost five decades. Kirloskar Pneumatic is the largest manufacturer of refrigeration compressors and allied equipments in India.

Other global majors like Johnson Controls (who acquired big time players like US based York & Frick , the Danish giant Sabroe, the Swedish major Stal etc.) have also chosen Pune as their core operation centre.

The other well known global refrigeration major – GEA Refrigeration India, from Europe, selected Pune as their all India operation centre. Another world major Emerson has taken over Kirloskar Copeland and has their India operations at Pune.

Several engineering institutions have made Refrigeration & AC as a compulsory subject for Graduation in Mechanical Engineering, thereby encouraging students to take up career in HVAC & R.

Looking at large & specialized projects using refrigeration, people in the country look towards Pune. It is not surprising, therefore, that the expertise for – be it the largest multi-purpose cold store in India, largest controlled atmosphere store, the first food distribution centre or large sized food processing projects, has gone from consultants & contractors from Pune. Same is the case with some of the air conditioning projects in the country.

Cold chain is an inevitable part of our lives today & there is a tremendous potential for the growth of cold chain in India realizing this the US Govt. through its’ wing USTDA (United States Trade & Development Agency) has shown considerable interest in the growth of cold chain in India and the city had a fair share of their representation .
