-- Prof. P.B. Sharma, Vice Chancellor, DTU recently attended 'EDUCON-2010' the Academic Interaction meet, which was held from August 20-23, 2010 at Colombo, Sir Lanka. Organized by the Sakaal Media Group in association with Computer Society of India and Association of Indian Universities, the meet was attended by eminent academicians, technocrats, industry representatives and policy makers involved in the field of education to deliberate on the new challenges in higher education and promote industry-academia interface.
On second day of the summit, Prof. Sharma gave a presentation on "Meeting the Challenges of Knowledge Age in Higher Education". In his presentation, Prof. Sharma said, "When it comes to the number of engineers per million population for different countries, India lags far behind South Korea, Japan, Australia and even China. In order to meet the challenges of the new knowledge age, we need to incorporate world-class curriculum design and delivery system, an academic environment that fosters synergy between education and research, Tech-savvy Campuses empowered with Knowledge Infrastructure, industry relevant education and research and innovations that are lead to new product development."
He also emphasized that there is need to expand the domain of engineering to new territories such as Medical Engineering, Music Engineering, Sports Engineering, Space Engineering, Green Engineering and Intelligent and Smart Engineering Systems, Knowledge and Wisdom Engineering, etc.
Suggesting a future roadmap for the engineering institutions, Prof. Sharma said, "Engineering educators need to transcend disciplinary boundaries to meet the changing needs of society, define and expand the frontiers of knowledge and innovation, focus on research in collaboration with industries to exploit key technologies, ensure transfer of knowledge and technological achievements to the society, and strive to maintain academic and research pre-eminence."
Other delegates, who attended the Summit, included Dr. Chandrakant Kokate, Vice-Chancellor, KLE University and convener of EDUCON-2010, Dr. P.T. Chande, Vice-President, Association of Indian Universities, Dr. H.A. Ranganath, Director, National Assessment & Accreditation Council, Prof. P.N. Ghosh, Vice Chancellor, Jadavpur University, and Dr. Raghunath K. Shevgaonkar, Vice Chancellor, University of Pune, among many others.
