DHL launches 'Gurukul' at Mumbai

World's leading logistics company opens specialised training centre to improve quality, safety & customer satisfaction in supply chain operations; First time in India industrial workers to be professionally trained in supply chain operations

New Delhi, Delhi, February 8, 2010 /India PRwire/ -- DHL, the world's leading logistics company, today inaugurated an operations simulation centre, 'GURUKUL' [1] at Kiravali in North Mumbai, India. An initiative of DHL Supply Chain, the training centre is aimed at developing the skills of blue collar workers by imparting a consistent and standardized training on several aspects of warehouse operations, which would include the critical subjects of Safety, Health and Environment at their warehouses across the country.

With the General Sales Tax (GST) soon to be introduced in India, the 3PL market is poised to re-invent itself and companies that quickly adapt to the changing scenario will not only differentiate themselves, but also successfully capture this major growth opportunity. This requires well trained, professional and skilled employees who will be in a position to fulfil the growing demand for higher levels of operational and quality compliance. Quick to recognize this, DHL has set up its Training Center which will impart best practice knowledge to its employees, thereby up scaling their skills sets, so that its service offering is in par with its global standards.

Designed in-house by a team of DHL supply chain experts from the Asia Pacific region, this training will not only be a part of the employee induction program at the grass root level but will also assist in developing its existing workforce to encourage and promote their talent for further growth within the organisation. The training module has been adapted to suit local requirements and will also be delivered in Hindi for the blue collared employees.

An interesting combination of classroom coaching and practical assessment will form a part of the curriculum. Employees will be trained on various aspects of warehouse operations including order picking, inventory management, housekeeping, hazard awareness and security.

Speaking at the launch, Vikas Anand, Director - Operations, DHL Supply Chain India, said, "With this program we aim to develop our employees by facilitating practical experience of working in a DHL warehouse. This structured training program will enhance their knowledge and competencies enabling them to deliver excellent quality, safe and superior operations, which will set new benchmarks and result in a high level of customer comfort and confidence."

Once established, DHL plans to set up similar training centers in other parts of the country, to eventually cover all employees in India.

[1] Gurukul in Sanskrit is derived from guru "teacher" and kula, "extended family". In the hallowed tradition of Hinduism, the gurukul was a residential type of school with teachers and students living in the same house, irrespective of their social standing.
