DTU students organize Clothes Donation Camp

Students of Delhi Technological University organized a Clothes & Woolens Donation Camp to aid the underprivileged at the University Campus.

New Delhi, Delhi, January 21, 2010 /India PRwire/ -- Budding engineers of tomorrow showcased their softer side when students of Delhi Technological University (DTU), formerly Delhi College of Engineering, organized a camp to collect old clothes and woolens, for distributing it to the underprivileged lot. As a part of the students group 'The Urge' (www.theurge.in), four undergraduate students of DTU organized a clothes donation camp from January 18-21, 2010 at the University campus. According to Abhishek Bindal, a third year student of Computer Engineering at DTU and a member of The Urge, "The philosophy behind The Urge is "I Be the Change". Every day we had been reading in papers about people dying due to cold and want of woolens. So we decided to take the lead and make a contribution, howsoever modest, to the underprivileged lot." Other members of his team included Anand Meena and Abhishek Kannojia from the same class and Harsimranjeet Singh, third year student of Polymer Science and Chemical Technology.

The four-day camp turned out to be a huge success and saw not just the students coming forward but also staff, officers and faculty members of the University to donate their old sweaters, jackets, coats, trousers, shirts and other clothing items. Some even donated suitcases full of clothes at the camp. All the collection was then handed over to a nearby centre of Navjyoti India Foundation, which in turn has taken the responsibility of distributing the clothes among the deserving lot. "It is really heartening to see students of engineering, who are usually so busy with their classes and practical work taking out time and indulging in such philanthropic activities. We at DTU are committed to do our bit for the society in whichever way possible," said Prof. P.B. Sharma, Vice Chancellor, DTU.

The Urge is next organizing a Green Energy Competition on February 16, 2010, where entries are invited from students across the Country on their idea of making Earth a better place to live in, whether it is in terms of energy saving, mitigating climate change, pollution control, etc. The last date to send in the entries is February 5, 2010. The best of the ideas will be presented to the Government of Delhi. Details about the competition can be accessed at www.esummit.in/energy.html.
