Tweet-- In a program jointly organized by Spicmacay and Lovely Professional University (LPU), well known dramatist Probir Guha delivered a lecture at Shri Baldev Raj Auditorium, Lovely Campus, Phagwara. The program was intended to give a first hand experience of real world concepts of theater and drama to students of Applied Arts pursuing studies at LPU.
Probir Guha is one of the most widely acclaimed theater artists of the country, with the distinction of being the one who has always championed social causes and have acted as the voice of the oppressed. His theater company "Alternative Living Theater" was set up in 1977 and he chose to field artists from under privileged classes, so that the depiction of suffering and struggle of the oppressed can be presented in a more intense and prolific manner.
Shri Guha, in his lecture, touched the various aspects of theater, its relevance and its future. Defining theater as a medium to connect with the masses, he said "Theater is one of the most potent forms of art capable of sending a particular pertinent message to the society. It is more of a way of communicating, what is unspeakable, what can not be said with words. Yes, the words have to be used during the course of progression of story telling in a drama; but wherever required, they have to be chosen with utmost care as words carry power and induce a definite response in the other person"
The lecture was followed by an interactive session with the students. Responding to the query of one of the students, who asked about the prerequisites of being a theater artist, Guha cited the "ability to feel" as the most important trait that one should have within him to be an effective theater artist. He said, "Whether the drama is based on any social issue, an imaginative plot or romance, the feel-factor on the part of a performer is the first must."
The three hour lecture which was held in two session invoked strong positive reactions amongst the students. Krishan Kumar, one of the students of applied arts said, "After listening to Probirji, I now realize books are so hollow when it comes to understanding the spirit of art. One needs a mentor, for sure." Mrs. Rashmi Mittal, Executive Dean- LPU in her statement said, "Listening to Probirji was a learning experience not only for the students, but me also. His observations were enlightening and thought provoking. By bringing such eminent artists to LPU campus, we want to elevate the levels not only of professional acumen, but also thought process of our students."
