Mumbai, Maharashtra, January 15, 2009 /India PRwire/ -- SVKM’s NMIMS University celebrated its 6th University Day on 13th January in auspicious presence of prominent space scientist and Rajya Sabha Member Dr. K Kasturirangan.

Dr. Kasturiragan, the chief guest on the occasion, while addressing the gathering, cautioned India not to surrender its hard earned knowledge and experience in Space to the dictums of developed world.

The former Chairman of ISRO Dr. Kasturirangan said ''Some of countries of the developed world have a habit of changing rules and making new treaties to monopolise the world's resources. India had to wait for more than 30 years to join the nuclear club. Now that it is one of the pioneering nations in space technology

and satellite- based communication systems, it must protect and promote this edge.'' Dr. Kasturirangan was speaking on ''Integration of Technology, Management and Science in the Changing Paradigm'',

Mentioning India's three decade of isolation before joining the nuclear club, Dr K Kasturirangan said that in the highly competitive world, where the North Block comprising of European powers and the US called the tune on exploration and exploitation of resources, India must not surrender its hard earned knowledge and experience. He said the stage where India is now has been reached through hard work and constant upgradation of knowledge and skills among the country's scientists, technocrats, engineers and managers. ''The success achieved by ISRO has come after early failures which turned out to be stepping stones for success,'' he said.

Space technology can also be used to fight terrorism, though the 26/11 proved that it could be a double-edge sword. ''The terrorists had made use of space technology in the form of satellite maps and phones, which can be very potent and dangerous in the wrong hands.

Dr Kasturirangan also praised the media for supporting the efforts of the country's space technology sector. ''Their constant presence has kept the sector on its toes. From my personal experience, I have learnt that being honest and candid with the media on new developments is often the best approach, as they have a tendency to overuse their imagination when they cannot get hold of facts.''

Dr. Kasturirangan also released a case study titled “Life Line: A Social Initiative Led by B-School Students” on this occasion. Prior to this, Vice Chancellor of NMIMS University Dr. N M Kondap delivered the welcome address and shed the light on the achievements of the university, while the concluding remark was given by Dr. R.S Gaud, Dean-School of Pharmacy & Technology Management of NMIMS.

The University Day ceremony started with NMIMS Flag hoisting by Shri B P Sheth, Vice President-SVKM and Mentor-NMIMS.
