The University of Mumbai today in addition to the A level courses, granted acceptance and equivalence to a combination of CIE’s A and AS Level courses for Engineering and B.Pharma courses. As per a notification issued by the University of Mumbai, students who have passed Mathematics, Physics at ‘A’ Level and Chemistry at ’AS’ Level will be considered eligible for Bachelor of Engineering (except chemical engineering) and a student who has passed Mathematics, Chemistry at ‘A’ Level and Physics at ‘AS’ Level will be considered eligible for Bachelor of Chemical Engineering. The circular also stated that students who have passed Mathematics, Chemistry at ‘A’ Level and Physics/Biology at ‘AS’ Level will be considered eligible for B.Pharma course. The students shall of course need to clear the mandatory Common Entrance Test prescribed by the Directorate of Technical Education.
Speaking on the occasion, Ian Cambers, CIE Regional Manager, South Asia, said, “We are delighted that the prestigious University of Mumbai shall now accept our students to its affiliated colleges. The acceptance of A and AS levels is a big step and shall assist thousands of CIE students in appearing for the entrance examination and taking admission to the desired courses”. He added “Over the past year more and more Indian universities have accepted CIE qualifications for admission. This is an excellent move to ensurepathwaysfor a growing number ofstudents with international qualifications”.
“We are very happy with the recognition from the University of Mumbai, especially in the current scenario where students are unable to gain admission into the choice of stream and choice of college despite scoring a higher percentage. The A-Level eligibility guidelines from the University of Mumbai will benefit the students, especially in the science stream since the students prepare only for 4 subjects. The A-level syllabus covers the MH-CET syllabus to a significant extent. This will be useful for all the students preparing for their competitive entrance examination.” said Mr. Hanif Kanjer, Director, Rustomjee Cambridge International School and Junior College, Mumbai.
The development puts CIE students at par with students of other examination boards and gives them an opportunity to apply and study course of choice.
In approval of the move, Ms. Abha Dharampal, Principal, Utpal Sanghvi School, Mumbai, said, “We welcome the move by the University of Mumbai. The Era of suspense is over. With the Indian Medical Association and the other institutions givingrecognition, the tension and undecided future of further education by students in India, in Mumbai in particular, taking the world’s oldest and most popular gold standards, A levels is now over.”
