“Computers have increasingly become medium of communication, even terrorists & criminals are using computers to accomplish terrorist attacks, threats and scam. Hence, we need police officers who are not only computer savvy but are also able to investigate crimes committed using computers” said Mr. Y. S. Dadwal, Commissioner of Police, Delhi. Mr. Dadwal was speaking at the Valedictory function organized by the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGISPU) to facilitate almost 100 investigating officers of Delhi Police and two officers of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) who have successfully completed their six-weeks training programme in ‘Cyber Crime Investigation & Computer Forensics’, conducted by the University School of Information Technology (USIT) of GGSIPU. Mr. Dadwal also announced that 100 more officers will undergo similar training at GGSIPU.

The participating officers of Delhi Police, who are at the rank of Sub-Inspector, Inspector and even Assistant Commissioner of Police, undertook this training programme in two batches held during April-May, 2008 and May-June, 2008. Conferring the Certificates of Participation on the second batch of trainee officers Prof. K. K. Aggarwal, Vice Chancellor, GGSIPU, said, “We at GGSIPU have always believed that the University ought to meet the needs of the society. We are glad that through this course we are able to collaborate with Delhi Police and be of relevance to the society.” The first batch of participants were given their certificates by Mr. Dadwal.

The training programme in Cyber Crime Investigation & Computer Forensics was conducted in realization of the fact that there is an increase in the number of crimes related to information technology and cyber space, and hence it has become crucial for the police force to be well-equipped to investigate and combat crimes committed using technology.

The first four weeks of the course provided inputs on Computer Hardware (including Dismantling & Assembling of PC, Storage Devices, and Peripherals), Computer Software (where subjects like MS-DOS, Windows Operating System, Linux, and MS Office etc. were covered) and Computer Networks (which included Data Communication Networks, TCP/ IP protocol suite, Network Protocols, Wireless Networks, and Network Security).

The last two weeks of the training concentrated exclusively on areas like Cyber Crime, Digital Fraud, Incident Response Systems, Computer Forensics Fundamentals, Cyber Law, E-mail Crime and Cyber Forensics, Credit Card Frauds, Forensic Tools, E-mail Tracing, Forensic Data Computing, and Nigerian Frauds, among others.

Faculty members of USIT and external experts from Delhi Police, Cyber Security Cell of NIC, CBI Academy, and ForensicGuru.com were involved in imparting the training programme.
