BITS Pilani and CEERI organizes workshop on Science, Imagination and Discovery for school Children

Pilani, Rajasthan, May 15, 2007 /India PRwire/ -- A unique summer science workshop was inaugurated today (14 May 2007) at BITS, Pilani. Jointly organized by the Community Welfare and International Relations Unit (CWIRU), BITS Pilani and Central Electronics and Engineering Research Institute (CEERI), Pilani, the week-long ( 14 – 22 May 2007) workshop “Science, Imagination and Discovery” aims to pique the imagination of young minds and to inculcate in them a sense of keen observation and imagination leading to discoveries as mentioned by Dr. Suman Kapoor, Chief, CWIRU. The recent visit by the His Excellency, the President of India to BITS and the summer workshops on various domains such as music, sports and science being organized in various countries abroad were the inspirational forces behind this wokshop. 33 children studying in classes VII to XII at various schools of Pilani are geared up to enjoy the fun-filled intellectual workshop coming to them as a releief from their strenuous final examinations.

Prof. L K Maheshwari, Vice Chancellor, BITS Pilani in his inaugural address explained in simple terms the latest advancements in technology such as the application of nanotechnology in various spheres of day-to-day life. He made the children proud by saying “You are the future of this country”and added that workshops of this kind would go a long way in developing excellent Human Resources for the country.

Dr.Rajesh Luthra, Head, HRD Group, CSIR Delhi ,the Chief Guest provided an overview of the various national programs being offered by CSIR to promote science in our country. he focused on the need to nurture young minds with science and emphasized on the pervasive influence of technology in everyday life. He mantioned about several initiatives taken by CSIR to promote science education in India such as ; CSIR Program on youth for Leadership in Science, Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana in Science and Medicine, National Talent Search Examination, CBSE Merit Scholarship etc. He also discussed the career options for science students’ such as IISER Fellowship, IISC young fellowship program. He concluded by saying that we should have passion for science and CSIR will do all that is possible to promote excellence in science education.

Dr. Chandra Shekhar, Director, CEERI in his speech said that this is a new and welcome attempt in Pilani. While motivating students he said that science is an knowledge system, open to inquiry and the scientists keep on updating this knowledge. They are always subject to change and improvements. He urged students to observe with open and independent mind. He inspired participants by saying, “Pleasure of discovery is immense and that this workshop will put you in the path of discovery .”

The workshop is being coordinated by Dr.V.K.Dubey and Dr.Suman Kapur from CEERI and BITS, Pilani.The week-long science workshop includes visits to various science laboratories, some simple lecture-cum-discussion sessions in basic sciences, movie shows on Robotics, Space, Biological Machines, Astronomy, Human Brain, CSIR, etc., science quiz and presentations by students.
