The emergence of a smile in Manipur, skills for employability

Since the increasing job prospects and opportunities are too large to be met by formal institutions having long course schedules, non-formal education and training has to be resorted to. This requirement has initiated students to seek standard institutions offering high quality courseware, curriculum and short course schedules among the non-formal institutions. The basic objective of the Institute is to boost up studentswith upto-date knowledge and skills as well as scientifictemperament so as to feed the ever increasing demand forInformation Technology personnels in the State in particular andNorth East Region in general.

Since the increasing job prospects and opportunities are too large to be met by formal institutions having long course schedules, non-formal education and training has to be resorted to. The basic objective of the Institute is to boost up studentswith upto-date knowledge and skills as well as scientific temperament so as to feed the ever increasing demand forInformation Technology personnels in the State in particular and North East Region in general. A support is also being provided with microfinance through the centre for the students, said Angela of Responsenet.

The tiny State of Manipur with a population of 20 lakhsapproximately is far behind in terms of development comparedto other States in the country. The problems in the State is compounded with the increasing number of unemployed youths totalling about 3.5 lakhs. Various agencies of the Government aswell as non-Government Organisations have been taking up multifarious programmes for the people so that they may be able to be self-employed or gainfully employed as employmentopportunities in the Government sector has become virtually impossible. In the present context, being a Computer literate has become almost a necessity and also an added qualification for anindividual to be employed or be self-employed.

The centre will create the employment opportunities for the young people of Imphal to be inclusive in the information revolution-first, by teaching them effective and required computer skills that are in demand in today''s economy. Secondly, by teaching them to effectively manage their skills for potential employers. The project aims at preparing adolescent and youth with skills in English proficiency and soft skills for enhancing their prospects of employment in fast expanding sectors like retail, hospitality, BPO etc thus enabling inclusive development and further provided impetus with micro finance opportunities for the students to start their enterprise.

Responsenet aims to serve people of all ages and backgrounds in Imphal, Manipur as a supporting organisation. We aim to serve approximately 500 people per per month-75% of which are children and teenagers. This centre will benefit low income groups where the population has one of the lowest per capita income in the country and there is a bleak job market. The problems are further enhanced with the limited access to communications and everyday technology.
