Shaking Up the Construction World
New Earthquake Protection Device (EPD) technology for buildings promises immediate occupancy after an event as well as more rapid return on installation investment, officials at Taylor Devices, Inc. announced today.
Tweet-- Taylor Devices president Douglas Taylor said technical/engineering updates, materials and manufacturing techniques for its line of cutting-edge EPDs are designed to keep his company at the forefront of the marketplace. "This also exemplifies our commitment to on-going research to provide viable, affordable, real-life solutions for our global customers."
Founded in 1955, the company's structural earthquake resistant solutions are at work today in over 275 installations worldwide. Taylor, who represents the second generation of his family in the business, has been instrumental in pioneering Shock Absorbers, Liquid Springs, Shock Isolation Systems, Seismic Isolators, Vibration Dampers, Power plant Snubbers, and other types of Hydro-Mechanical Energy Management Products for new construction and retrofit projects around the globe.
"Our dampers offer a turn-key solution to shock and vibration problems, with Taylor Devices providing full analysis, development, manufacturing and testing capabilities to satisfy the most exacting customer requirements," Taylor said.
The foundation for the company's success rests on its precision machining and manufacturing of the EPD systems. For example, Taylor devices utilize solid stainless steel piston rods, not chrome plated steel or other less reliable alternate metals. "We do not skimp on quality because we know lives are at stake," Taylor explained. To maintain its high leadership excellence, the company also manufactures its own seals, which are essential to the long-term performance of the product.
With new tech updates and efficiencies in place, the company believes it has created an opportunity to extend past its previous primarily commercial experience, directly into the residential marketplace. "People worry about earthquakes, hurricanes and other seismic events," Taylor explained, "we now have the framed-structure solutions to help keep families safe at home - and we can do it affordably."
Commercial building owners and managers/operators also will find the newest systems very attractive because, in many instances, they allow for retrofit installation without having to close or empty the structure during installation.
"Whether in new construction, or for refurbishing an unsafe building to bring it into code, we have developed solutions that fit our customers' specific needs -- for safety, for reliability, and for affordability," Taylor said. "And, we've worked very hard to make these solutions easier to install and maintain than ever before."
He continued: "Construction of a new building with our earthquake dampers will generally cost no more than a conventional building. The dampers 'soften' the affects of seismic activity, and therefore reduce the amount of concrete and steel required. This reduction is enough to offset the cost of the EPD.
"Because most buildings have very little damping, they keep moving for an long time after an earthquake - like a car with bad shocks. With our dampers in place, the buildings get a smooth ride, making them structurally much safer. Buildings with our dampers can generally ride out a severe seismic event with only cosmetic damage."
