LANXESS advocates 'Green Chemistry'

Mumbai, Maharashtra, June 7, 2010 /India PRwire/ -- With our earth facing mounting environmental challenges, the corporate bandwagon has been doing its bit to become environmentally conscious. More and more companies are focusing on the concept of 'Green Chemistry' where efforts are being directed towards minimizing or eliminating negative environmental impacts by way of reducing waste products, using non-toxic components, and improving efficiency.

LANXESS India, a German based specialty Chemicals Company is one such company that is fervently adopting eco-friendly technologies and processes in delivering premium products. LANXESS is known through out the world for its 'Green Chemistry'. From 2007 to 2009 the company has reduced its direct climate gas emissions by more than 50 percent, annual emissions from the group's plants were cut from 3.5 million to 1.5 million metric tons of CO2 equivalents.

This year, LANXESS will start its cogeneration power plants for resource-friendly energy generation in India and Belgium. The total investment in these projects adds up to more than EUR 70 million, spread over several years.

A power plant being constructed at the Nagda site in India will help production there to run independently of external electricity supplies. The facility, which generates four megawatts of power and up to 45 metric tons of steam every hour, will be run on biomass fuels. Following completion, it will cut net carbon dioxide emissions there to zero. At the second production site in Jhagadia in India, LANXESS is currently building a plant for the production of ion exchange resins. Energy here will be generated by an ultra-efficient plant run on environmentally friendly natural gas.

Presently the production site in Nagda is employing the Reverse Osmosis Technology as an innovative approach to recycling domestic sewage water and harnessing it for industrial use. In a city like Nagda where water is in short supply, the utilization of sewage water is a boon. Moreover, the Chambal River which is the key source of water for irrigational and industrial purposes becomes parched in the dry months of May and June. Thus, multiple usage of the sewage water contributes significantly to the overall water balance. LANXESS' systems and processes are not only crucial for the sustainability and long-term growth of the chemical industry in Nagda, but are also proving beneficial for its local community.

In Nagda, we have also tied up with SNEH, Special Need Education Home, to help in providing a holistic approach to life for the 21 differently abled children where we provide infrastructure improvement, the buying of new equipment for the home to cater to the needs of the physically and mentally challenged children. All this, in keeping with the company's policy of making a difference to communities wherever it goes.

According to Dr. Joerg Strassburger, Managing Director and Country Representative, LANXESS India, "We at LANXESS firmly believe that it is organizations with eco-friendly footprints and green products that benefit from sustainable growth. LANXESS has always been committed to green chemistry in its products and processes and has made eco-friendly choices available to the industry such as high performance 'green' tires, high-tech plastic for more fuel efficient transportation, and customized products for the biodiesel industry. Celebrating World Environment Day has true meaning for us we firmly believe in sustainable development and all our business practices are based on that belief".
