A book titled Beti by Shri Harsh Kumar pertaining to the role of women in building the society was released on the occasion of the presentation of Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini awards 2006 at the National Conference on Role of Women in Building the Society, at the National Museum here today. The Conference was inaugurated by Shri M.V. Rajashekharan, Minister for Planning. Shri Harsh Kumar is working as an Executive Director (Finance) in the Railway Board.

The book highlights the fact that the Indian society suffered from a number of drawbacks at different times. The social reformers of the times had, however, managed to bring necessary reforms in the society to eliminate these drawbacks, which included the regressive role for women. The book discusses a number of issues relating to women and girl child in a very simple and straight forward manner. It particularly draws the attention of the readers towards female foeticide and makes the point that ours is a vibrant and fast developing society, which will ensure gender equality.
