Tweet-- Genus Plc., listed at the London Stock Exchange, the largest animal genetics company in the world launched its India operation today through its subsidiary Genus India. Genus is active in cattle breeding through its brand ABS. ABS stands for American Breeders Service, which was founded in 1941. The company based at Pune has ambitious plans to increase the productivity of Indian dairy animals through supply of superior genetics to ensure that the calves born out are of increased productive life with better profitability for the dairy farmers.
Addressing a gathering of progressive dairy farmers the Managing Director of M/s Genus Plc., Mr. Rob Holliday emphasized the need of higher productive dairy animals in India. Mr. Holliday outlined the growing gap between demand and supply of the milk in the country. The demand of milk is estimated to be 180 MMT by 2021-2022 as against approximately 118 MMT in 2011-12. To assist dairy farmers in the country in achieving their needs to increase their milk production Genus will provide dairy farmers with semen from intensively selected bulls. All bulls provided by the company are a result of a large breeding programme where only the best bulls are selected based on the performance of progeny. ABS currently owns over 30 of the top 100 bulls in the USA.
Talking to the gathering on this occasion Mr. Albert Reurink, Business Unit Director of Genus breeding drew the attention of the gathering that the dairy farming is becoming unviable for the farmers as the average milk production of the dairy animals is far too less in comparison to the world standards. Mr. Albert defined that while an average cross bred dairy animals produces 6.5 KGs milk per day the average milk production of dairy animals in US is 27 and in United Kingdom 24. it is not out of the place, he stressed, that India needs to increase the productivity of the dairy animals to attract more number of interested farmers by making it more profitable. The need of the hour, Mr. Albert opined that the genetic upgradation program is undertaken thru artificial insemination. Mr. Albert informed the gathering that the Genus Global is the largest breeding Company currently running its operations in over 60 countries of the world and is in the AI service for more than 70 years. In this connection ABS India has plans to supply imported semen to the country from its world class semen stations in other countries meeting the guidelines of Govt. of India and state breeding policies. Mr. Albert also informed the gathering that ABS has tied up with a well known semen station in India to produce semen superior quality semen doses for Indian conditions under its technical assistance.
Speaking on this occasion Dr. Samad, an eminent breeding scientist from Mumbai Veterinary college spoke on the need of genetic improvement of Indian dairy animals.
Dr. Thomas Santosh, Country Manager (Technical) of ABS India gave technical output about the products in offering from ABS India while Shri Uday S Tiwari, Country Manager welcomed the guests and presented the economical benefit to the dairy farmers thru artificial insemination by superior germplasm.
Also present during the launch function were many eminent dairy farmers of the country including Mr. Vishwas Chitale of Chitale group, Dr. AS Sidhu of MDVL, Ludhiana and Shri BS Redhu of Lakshya food from Jind, Haryana.
