2010 New Year Resolution: Stop Cramming Chickens Into Tiny Metal Cages
Humane Society International urges caring consumers to shun battery cage eggs.
Tweet-- Instead of the same old New Year's vows to work out more, chow down less, and floss regularly, how about something a bit different? Make New Year's resolutions for animals!
Humane Society International the international arm of the Humane Society of the United States, an animal welfare organization with 10.5 million members is urging caring consumers to shun battery cage eggs.
What is wrong with battery cages? It contributes to the horrific abuse of hens in farms. In India, more than 200 million egg laying hens spend their lives crowded into battery cages which are so tiny, the birds lack the space to fully stretch their limbs, let alone walk or experience most natural behaviors. These animals account for approximately 80 percent of India's egg production.
Due to public opposition to battery cage confinement, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, Germany, Austria and Norway have already banned battery cages. The European Union countries are phasing them out and there will be a total ban by 2012.In the US, California and Michigan are phasing out battery cages.
"We ask everyone to think before they buy and to make compassionate choices. Since buying battery cage eggs supports unimaginable cruelty to animals" says HSI's N.G.Jayasimha "We urge caring consumers to shun battery cage eggs this New Year".
