This year, the conference is partnering with leading organisations like Department of Rural Development & Land Reforms, Government of South Africa; Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development, Kenya; and UN Economic Commission for Africa, Ethiopia. Map Africa is likely to be attended by about 500 delegates from more than 20 countries of African continent. Expressing her views on the occasion of Map Africa, Aida Opoku-Mensah, Director ICT Division, United Nations Economic Commission of Africa, said "ECA is partnering with GIS Development to co-organize the Map Africa 2010 Conference so as to continuously enable the mainstreaming of geoinformation applications into all sectors of economic development in Africa"
The theme of the conference "Geospatial Readiness for Building Africa" aims to deliberate upon the vital role of geospatial technologies in the areas that contributes to nation's growth, and considered as the pressing issues of the continent, like infrastructure & utilities, cadastral mapping, land information management system (LIS), land policies, mining & exploration, emergency management etc. Discussing on the growth of the conference, Dr D.G. Clarke, Chief Director: National Geo-spatial Information, Chief Director: Surveys and Mapping, South Africa, said "The Map Africa Conference has grown into a leading conference and technical exhibition in the geo-spatial information and technology field in Africa. The organisers have the ability to bring to Africa powerful international speakers and the latest in technology. What an opportunity to be exposed to this, here in Africa."
To be able to achieve its aim, the conference shall host vision session, plenary sessions, symposia, seminars, workshops and technical sessions pertaining to latest and upcoming technologies & applications associated with nation's building. Map Africa shall be garnered by high profile speakers from across the continent, who shall provide a profound knowledge and great insight into the subject and also help in foreseeing the future that technology holds. The state-of- the-art exhibition of technologies and products shall be a significant component of Map Africa Conference. Acknowledging the kind of platform that Map Africa provides, Dr. Hussain Farah, Director General, Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development, Kenya, mentioned "Map Africa 2010 conference will promote one of our main mandates of promoting development and use of geospatial technologies in the sustainable development of Africa. We joined the partnership for organizing Map Africa, to bring together National mapping Organisations (NMOs) geospatial industry players so as to accelerate the technological reforms required by NMOs to enable deliver better services to geoinformation users".
