The country's leading cement maker Gujarat Ambuja Cements Ltd (GACL) is undertaking a new task in this capital city of Himachal Pradesh - disposing of the city's polythene waste. The company has reached an agreement with the Shimla Municipal Corporation in this regard.

According to the agreement, the corporation would send the polythene waste to GACL's plant at Darlaghat in Solan district once a week for disposal.

Municipal Commissioner Amitabh Awasthi told IANS Thursday that 1.7 tonnes of waste has already been sent to the company.

The government imposed a state-wide ban on the sale and use of polythene carrybags in 2004.

Despite the ban, around 200 kg of polythene waste is collected daily in Shimla.
