Most fuel outlets in Chennai remained closed for the third day, Wednesday, with long queues of vehicles lined up everywhere at the city's filling stations that were open. The government continues to monitor the shortage.
As trucks were off the road due to a nation-wide strike, the demand for diesel was considerably less, and oil companies claimed that 'the situation has been managed'.
Companies like Indian Oil Corp (IOC) and Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd (HPCL) rushed supplies throughout the city from their storage depots in the suburbs and about 200 outlets were open.
The situation is expected to improve further with the expected arrival of the Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd (BPCL) vessel, Sampurna Swaraj, with 12,000 tonnes of high speed oil in Chennai port Thursday.
BPCL sources attributed the scarcity to the delay in the arrival of a cargo vessel carrying 15,000 tonnes of diesel from Lebanon, which was expected at Chennai port June 20.
