Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit Sunday assured those engaged in meat trade in the national capital the government will look into their problems and set up more modern abattoirs.

Addressing a massive rally organised by the All India Jamiatul Quresh at the Ram Lila Ground here, she said her government would involve the community in setting up modern abattoirs. The Quresh community is mainly engaged in meat trade.

In a statement, the All India Jamiatul Quresh quoted the chief minister as assuring the community members that the government would not close down the Idgah abattoir in the heart of the city unless the new modern abattoirs are set up at Ghazipur in east Delhi.

On the problem of transport of livestock and harassment by authorities, including policemen, Dikshit said she would soon constitute a committee comprising members of Jamiatul Quresh and evolve ways to deal with the problem.

The rally was presided over by Jamiat president Sirajuddin Qureshi and attended by several leaders including Delhi Transport Minister Haroon Yusuf and noted social activist Udit Raj.
