Kolkata-based private electricity generator Visa Power Ltd has approached the coal ministry for additional coal linkage for its proposed Chhattisgarh power plant, whose capacity has been hiked to 1,200 MW from 600 MW.

The private developer had earlier sought coal allocation of 3.72 million tonnes a year to meet the fuel requirement of the initially proposed 600-MW capacity of the project.

Visa Power subsequently raised the project capacity to 1,200 MW in order to avail the government's mega project status that will enable the project to avail key fiscal concessions.

Following that, the developer has requested the coal ministry to provide an additional coal linkage of 3.72 million tonne a year to help it to mitigate the likely shortfall in the fuel requirement of the enhanced project capacity.

Visa Power signed a fresh memorandum of understanding with Chhattisgarh government Jan 7 for enhancing the capacity of the proposed Raigarh power project.

The envisaged power project comprises four units of 300 MW each.

The developer expects to commission the first unit of the project by September 2010, followed by the second and third unit in March 2011 and September 2011, respectively.
